Over 70% of the Spence Shale species are trilobites such as this Zacanthoides liddelli. Most of the fossils are fragmented but every now and then whole exoskeletons can be found. KUMIP 491808

Dalmanites is the first Silurian trilobite with soft parts preserved in 3D. This remarkable specimen has its delicate legs preserved which normally rot away before fossilization.

The most diverse and abundant group in the Liexi fauna are trilobites. In some cases, like this Niobella, we can find preserved digestive tracts.

New 'in press' trilobite paper by Peng et al. in the journal Palaeoworld about a new Cambrian dameselloid trilobite--and casts some doubt on the supposed relationship between dameselloids and the later odontopleurids. But just look at the funky hypostomes in F, G, & J in the figure from the paper. #TrilobiteTuesday #arthropoda #trilobita #paleontology #palaeontology #fossil #china #cambrian

The trident of Walliserops is rigid, fixed to the head. Even if it did spear a tasty morsel on it, there is no way it could have gotten it to its mouth. Cue sad trilobite noises. Maybe Walliserops made s'mores for its friends? I think there are some #paleoart opportunities here. #trilobita #arthropoda #TrilobiteTuesday #paleontology #palaeontology #fossil #evolution

Starting #TrilobiteTuesday a bit early today. I'm showing off sclerites of the silicified trilobite, Euptychaspis lawsonensis Adrain & Westrop, 2005. It is from the late Cambrian Notch Peak Fm. in the Wah Wah Mtns of western Utah. Trilobites preserved in this way have an obscene amount of detail for each exoskeletal element, but they are almost always disarticulated (not hooked together).
Happy late #TrilobiteTuesday
Here is a new trilobite species, Eosaukia anhuiensis Lei & Peng in press. The paper is a preview before it is printed in Acta Palaeontologica Sinica. Just look at those bizarre genal spines coming off the side of the head!

For Trilobite Tuesday, I bring you the spectacularly spiny Boedaspis ensifer Whittington & Bohlin, 1960 from the lower Ordovician of the St. Petersburg region, Russia (image from https://paleoart.com/acd-6213-boedaspis-ensifer-whittington-bohlin-1960/). Beyond the remarkable spines, I'd like to point out something unusual about the head in odontopleurid trilobites generally. #arthropoda #fossil #trilobita

For the last #TrilobiteTuesday of 2022, a bronze Asaphus kowalewskii, a spectacular Ordovician alien believed to crawl submerged in sediment with only its stalked eyes (peduncles) protruding. The "fangs" underneath are not teeth, but a forked hypostome. Look out, 2023!

For a late-day #TrilobiteTuesday we have the poorly-known, but quite distinctive Cambrian trilobite Pentacantha murrawongense Sloan & Laurie, 2004. This trilobite is only known from disarticulated sclerites in New South Wales, Australia. It is some sort of bizarre ptychoparoid. The curved spines on the head originate above the eyes—they are not eyestalks. Why they were there is a good question. #trilobite #arthropoda #paleontology #palaeontology #cambrian #australia #newsouthwales

Turns out, silicification may not magically stop at the boundary of fossils, and it may be accomplished with the involvement of microbes. #TrilobiteTuesday #taphonomy #cambrian #microbes

For #TrilobiteTuesday, I give you the aptly named Fantasicolithus isabelae Fortey & Gutiérrez-Marco, 2022. This bizarre Ordovician trinucleid from Peru has a pair of weird subcephalic props under its head. What were they for? And, do other trinuclieds with more typical dorsal preservation also secretly bear these structures?

@jopabinia yeah, I'm probably going to get tired of this forced alliteration pretty soon. I think #TrilobiteTuesday and #ThylacocephalanThursday will continue.
