π₯ π£ This is probably bad timing, with all the political chaos in Israel, but we're looking for a PhD student to continue a grad student's project on mRNA transfer through tunneling nanotubes.
Start date ~Jan 2024.
We are looking for someone interested in deciphering the molecular mechanism of mRNA transfer, by performing a CRISPR/siRNA/drug screen, and using molecular biology & biochemistry tools.

Several years ago, we published our work (in collaboration with
Arjun Raj) on the transfer of mRNA between mammalian cells via cellular connections called #tunnelingnanotubes.
https://www.pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.1706365114
The problem with this work was that it was a very partial picture. Because we used single molecule FISH, we had information on transfer of only a small number of mRNAs.
Relatively early, I asked what is the extent of mRNA transfer? Can we find the whole transferome"?

π₯π₯ π₯ π£ Our paper in
@eLife is finally published!
"Global analysis of contact-dependent human-to-mouse intercellular mRNA and lncRNA transfer in cell culture"
https://elifesciences.org/articles/83584
I'd like to thank the two students Sandipan Dasgupta and Daniella Dayagi who did most of the work, for Markus Landthaler
and @ewyler for doing the sequencing, Tsvyia Olender for most of the bioinformatics and Rob & Jeff for promoting and supporting this complicated project.

@Datta_Lab That is very interesting!
But if you do not detect viral RNA/protein, how can you tell if the virus does NOT also infect OSN?
In this animal study https://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(22)00135-0 they found ~6% OSN infected.
In addition, this study https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abo0171 showed that the virus CAN infect ACE2-negative cells (e.g. neurons like OSN) through #TunnelingNanotubes
Did anyone look at biopsies from the acute phase?
