I got the #UbuntuTouch BQ tablet a couple of years ago just for this.
Be aware, it can only do light stuff. Compiling #GCC is _no_ fun at all.
It still works fine for small stuff though.
#UBports is doing some good work there.

I quite like #KDE in its current form, I've never been able to cope with #GNOME, #Unity I tolerate because it's what comes with #UBports (would love to try out plasma mobile on my bq tablet)
The #desktopEnvironment I most want to like is #LXQt: the elegance of plasma, with the performance you need for old HW
Haven't gotten around to taking it for a proper spin yet though
