Re last boost: If you're working or attending school at a UC facility, have an Aranet monitor and are getting high CO2 readings, please do toot us about it. #Pandemic #COVID #UCAccessNow
33 years post-ADA. Multiple notices from the DoJ and being sued. How is it UC is still creating websites that don't use equitable alt text & image description?
The image loading tag reads "lazy", but "ableist" would be more accurate. #UCAccessNow #Ableism #a11y

When you have someone in a meeting who needs transcription/notetaking to meet their access needs, talk directly to them about it if you have security worries. Offer them an accessible human-based alternative. Don't just shut them out based on a meeting bot their university is actually forcing on them as "more affordable" than a person taking notes. #Ableism #AI #UCAccessNow
Note these are not always used for nefarious purposes. Students who have "accommodations" to use Otter.ai and similar for transcriptions will be accompanied by an Otter bot named after them.
There is a risk - as with all cloud-based things - because your info passes through Otter's servers. All the more reason for universities to hire work/study student notetakers again. As soon as they could cheap-out with inferior robonotetaking, they did. #Ableism #AI #UCAccessNow

University of California does many things that aren't in line with what their own researchers say are best practice.
So UCSD could sponsor a talk like this, but the fact is that UC still prioritizes cars and that's spatial priority is one of the reasons that UC Davis racks are an inaccessible design (to shove more of a certain cycle together), as well as why UCD campus buildings are far apart, esp for those with mobility disabilities.

The UC Davis Student Disability Center and UC Davis Recreation have a survey to ask about access needs for sports and recreation. BE AMBITIOUS We want everything abled students are getting.
They don't have a freeform comment field (purposefully) so find ways to use the existing fields to ask for beach/off-road wheelchair rentals/library, off-road handcycles, "adaptive" cycle frames with e-assist, ACCESSIBLE CYCLE RACKS AT UC DAVIS, etc. Think big! @disability

The fabulous cycle/pedestrian/wheelchair path at "bike-friendly" UC Davis today. Look how space is prioritized for more sustainable and less armored forms of transport...

Since National Weather Service, Sacramento doesn't feel blind/LV folks are part of the public they should be serving, we've provided the image description/alt text they've once more neglected to post. #UCAccessNow #CAwx

Red flag warning.
Things you may not realize are fire risks (and that you should not do, esp during this warning):
- Park your car on top of or very near weeds, dry grasses. The hot car is enough to start a fire with that tinder.
- Using power garden equipment. Sparks from mower blades, heat from mow/blow motors, etc. can start a fire.
And then there's the obvious stuff like chucking cigarette butts, using BBQs, campfires, etc.
Also: PGE has announced it's likely they'll be doing pre-emptive power shut-offs (PSPS) so check your batteries, replace ones that need replacing, charge the rechargeables up, and freeze some water bottles if you've got extra room in your freezer so if power is cut off, your freezer will stay cold longer (and you'll have cold water at least if it goes on for a long time). https://www.pge.com/en_US/residential/outages/public-safety-power-shuttoff/learn-about-psps.page
On the left, inaccessible racks installed at UC Davis' Orchard Park well AFTER the UC Access Now Demandifesto pointed out these racks were inaccessible.
Middle: What they had $$ for (some claim accessible racks are "too expensive")
Right: What you get if you continue driving - sheltered parking & charging and plenty of it.
Abled cycle advocates mostly have NOT joined us in pushing University of California for better! @TheWarOnCars #UCAccessNow #BikeTooter
Are you a disabled grad student at UC Davis? Have you had trouble getting "accommodations"? Has UC Davis been trying to push you out? UAW 2865 is trying to get more testimonials from folks like you so they can see how widespread this ableism is and contemplate how to come to the defense of disabled workers. #Ableism #UCAccessNow
This is frequently the way any improvement in accessibility of physical infrastructure is framed:
It's end of the list.
It's about mere legal compliance rather than equity.
It won't happen until there's something like seismic instability that imperils important abled people as well.
Ooh, toilets! How long did you abled people have to wait to get toilets you could use?

We created a "Benefits Counseling" document to help at-risk folks in the UC community know about programs they might not already have known about. Among those is Homes on Wheels Alliance.
If you have to live in a vehicle (not glamping, but homeless if it weren't for living in your vehicle) and cannot afford a solar system for your basic needs (recharging cell phone, lighting, maybe electric blanket), you can apply to get a donated 200W system if you're able to travel to Pahrump, NV on Oct 14. Read the details:
Something we need to keep in mind with surveys and research on modes of delivery for education is that it's comparing apples with oranges yet few acknowledge that.
That is - we've had millenia and trillions of investment in face-to-face teaching and comparatively little time and investment in developing and training faculty in creative accessible teaching online. #UCAccessNow
UC Access Now demanded that any micromobility programs have accessible models available. Looks like this is yet another demand for accessibility to the public that UC will keep ignoring despite being a public university. #UCAccessNow #BikeTooter
At least a couple UC med researchers on social media could credibly be among the unnamed physicians here.

Interesting to see what happens with this, especially since the clerk is being held accountable not just in their capacity as a member of an organization, but as an individual.
Many individuals within UC wilfully do the most cruelly ableist things, then hide behind UC's phalanx of attorneys. If they were held individually accountable as well, boy would things change. #UCAccessNow #DisabilityLaw #ADA

This was not specifically made to be a tactile map, but shows that it would be easy - but for ableism - for folks to design more accessible public exhibits. This is a bas relief of Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve.
I'm not blind, so I couldn't credibly test how well it would work. I think it lacks a star for "you are here" orientation and it also lacks braille - the letters are raised Roman letters, but still shows it's possible to make tactile signage...none of UC Davis' outdoor exhibits that we know of have braille or tactile signage. #UCAccessNow #Ableism
