As an expert™️ in genetic mutations (just kidding), I find it fascinating that this specific pigeon has a coloboma, a congenital eye abnormality resulting in a gap or defect in parts of the eye, impacting both vision and appearance — Columbus coloboma.

NIce start to walk round my #LocalPatch this evening. We watched each other for a few minutes then the buzzard flew to another scruby tree a little further away. Eventually magpies took exception to this and chased it off.

Got a walk in yesterday afternoon - flexibility of WFH is good Kingfisher back by the lock hadn't seen it since the cold snap with lock iced over.

Little grebe ran coot-like across the river then gently disappeared into reeds at rivers edge.

Four more species added to #LocalPatch list for 2023: skylark, goldcrest, great spotted woodpecker and house sparrow.

Strangely the one I felt least likely to see was the sparrow - it must be years since I've last seen one but they used to be everywhere when I was a lad...

One of my favourite things about this time of year is the presence of all the winter thrushes: Song and Mistle thrushes, Blackbirds, both local and migrants, plus the beautiful winter visitors, the Redwings and Fieldfares. They were grazing the fields at Cosmeston Lakes CP in good numbers today.

Though we haven't had snow in my part of south Wales, the temperatures have been below freezing long enough for rivers, lakes and Cardiff Bay to partially freeze over, and to cause some cold weather bird movement. Today's unusual visitors to the Bay included 4 Goldeneye - these are two of the females.
