@Silversnapples Well you have the island right now. (-:

Alas, it is the island where the people that you decry have decided to _exile themselves_ to.

A perhaps cheering thought for you is that the is only in the situation that it is in because the sweeping landslide for the Republican party at the mid-term elections did _not_ happen as predicted.

After the short circus of 15 speaker votes, back to business as usual.

Getting rid of 87,000 jobs to protect a few very rich tax avoiders also known as GOP donors and owners.

Yup, already imagined that. (-:

Ironically, increased bipartisanship is the exact opposite of the outcome that the party-within-a-party wants.

One interesting thing to think about is how cohesive the party-with-a-party is over the coming years. If it is strongly cohesive, then the effectively is a 3-party chamber, in all but name.

@SteelyCityDan @chris It's a 9% minority of the party blocking the other 91% by holding the entire chamber hostage. It's not about just what happens now, but what happens whenever the party-within-a-party decides to hold something hostage again at any point over the next 2 years, because the numbers will be the same. If they don't find some way to accommodate now, they will keep doing this on any number of votes in the future.

@GrahamLester In reality, the federal executive and judiciary, all of the state governments, and even the U.S. Senate, all keep functioning. The House of Representatives malfunctioning for a few days is not the huge problem that quotation is making it out to be.

The _real_ problem will be that this clearly shows that the majority party in the House is divided, and will have great internal trouble throughout the next two years.

@ancientsounds Political parties in at the federal level are rather looser than they are in the U.K., but that's a rough approximation to what is going on.

It bodes ill for what's going to happen for the next two years, as a deadlock _within_ the House majority party will block lots of stuff. Either there is going to be some bipartisanship, or the party-within-a-party will hold everything to ransom.

@neilturner Actually, the title says "House", not "Senate". For what happens to the Senate, see mastodonapp.uk/@JdeBP/10963020

Did I just hear that right? Lauren Boebert called out Donald Trump in her speech and told him and they don't have the votes and it's time to yield

So the choice of Speaker is more of a matter specifically for the majority party than it is in the House of Commons.

And an internal division in the Republican party seriously affects the chances of electing a Speaker, which has to be done afresh each time, rather than being effectively rubber-stamped after the first time as in the U.K..

Unlike in the House of Commons, the office of the Speaker in the House of Representatives is far more of a partisan political office.

There's no (theoretical) partisan neutrality, nor a gentleman's agreement that the Speaker gets chosen in one session and then stands unopposed (by major parties) in elections thereafter, and so keeps on being the Speaker.

What stuff the Senate can do without the House of Representatives, such as consent to Presidential appointments of executive and judicial officials, can carry on.

The judicial and executive branches of the federal government will carry on, although there is (by design) a looming deadline every year when they need new spending approved. All state governments are unaffected, too.

An irony here is that impeachments (of anyone) have to be started in the House of Representatives.

Some of the party-within-a-party want to impeach people almost as a first order of business, as a tit-for-tat gesture for what happened to Donald J. Trump.

But what's happening at the moment prevents this from happening, which looks bad to their "Get on with the impeachments already!" constituents/supporters.

The Senate can keep going, but the House of Representatives needs a Speaker just like the House of Commons does.

Congress as a whole is not malfunctioning, but one half of it is, so no laws can be passed. The Senate is not permitted to initiate finance bills, just like the House of Lords is not. They have to start in the House of Representatives. So no financial legislation can even be _started_.

@kkeller @Ralph_Hapschatt For a U.K. analogy:

Think the ERG in the modern day Conservative party, or Militant Tendency in the 1980s Labour party. There's a party within a party.

The numbers mean that there's a deadlock between the party-within-a-party and everyone else. If you remember as long ago as Liz Truss (-: , you'll know what sort of to-and-fro such a deadlock means.
