The US opposed democracy in Chile during the cold war, helping to bring about a brutal, murderous authoritarian dictatorship.

NPR has an interesting angle on this history today: that as more people became aware of the atrocities being committed and the US role, they became the modern international human rights movement:

More old photos. I took this picture in the lobby of the Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina in Havana, ten years ago while much of the country was furious over US involvement in . It was mind-blowing to see what the US represents to so much of the world up close for the first time. I have loads of these photos on this old Dropbox account.

I talked to @Tanvim @thenation about the US's inhumane policies regarding deportations to as well as how the US has regarded Haiti since the : thenation.com/article/society/. Rachèle Magloire & others have called attention to this issue but we're still ripping people from their families after they've done their time.
