Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS Released with Major Secure Boot Fix

Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS is now available to download. A point-six release?! They’re a bit unusual. Long-term support releases typically only receive five point releases during their support cycle so what’s going on? I’ll quote Ubuntu’s Graham Inggs. They explained why this exceptional release was required in a mailing list post sent earlier today (March 23): “Unlike previous point releases, 20.04.6 is a refresh of the amd64 installer media after recent key revocations, re-enabling their usage on Secure Boot enabled systems.” You can read more about the issue on Launchpad (not that you need to – it’s now fixed, after all). :sys_more_orange:

Regolith Desktop 2.0 is Out with Various Changes

A brand new version of the Regolith desktop is now available. Regolith desktop 2.0 aims to meet the needs of those who seek a fast and efficient desktop Linux experience controlled (primarily) from the keyboard. Regolith pairs the i3 tiling window manager with GNOME Flashback, and adds in an assortment of other open-source components to deliver a curated, keyboard-driven UX. And are some big changes since the Regolith 1.6 release from last summer. For one, devs have replaced the rofi “launcher” with a new “desktop executor designed specifically for Regolith” called ilia. Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS Released, Available to Download

The fourth point release of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is available to download. Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS is a newly-spun installer image that contains all core security patches, bug fixes, and app updates released to Ubuntu 21.04 since the release of Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS back in August of last year. Periodic refreshes to the install media is a necessary task for a long-term support release as it cuts down on the number of post-install updates a user needs to install. If you use Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and you install all issues updates as and when they’re releases you do not need to :sys_more_orange:

What is the ‘Ubuntu Pro’ Banner in Software Sources About?

A few readers have mailed in to tell me they’ve spotted a new promotion for Ubuntu Pro in the Software & Update apps on Ubunu 20.04 LTS. The banner isn’t a nag screen; you have to open the Software & Updates tool (which is often referred to as the ‘software sources’ utility) and click on the Livepatch tab to see it: Livepatch is Ubuntu’s LTS-only reboot-free kernel update mechanism which is especially handy in situations where rebooting a system (or a fleet of systems) to apply a security update is …unideal. Chances are those looking to enable Livepatch are the :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu Brings Thunderbird 91 to Older Releases to Fix Security Flaw

Thunderbird 91 is being back-ported to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. A security vulnerability affecting the Thunderbird 78.x series both builds offer is being actively exploited in the wild. But as upstream support for Thunderbird 78.x soon ends the flaw is unlikely be patched soon. For an Ubuntu LTS release that’s a major issue. So to ensure its users are not affected, Ubuntu developers are backporting the latest Thunderbird 91 release (which is an extended support release, thankfully) to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 21.04. This isn’t the first time Ubuntu has needed to do :sys_more_orange:

The third point release of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is available to download, albeit a few weeks later than was originally intended. This newly spun install images contains all of the security patches, bug fixes, and app updates released to Ubuntu 21.04 since the Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS released was issued back in February. New installer media is a necessary task for a long-term support release as it cuts down considerably on the number of post-install updates required. Or to put it another way: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is supported until 2025. If the install media was not periodically refreshed it would mean :sys_more_orange:
