Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS Released with Updated Kernel, Graphics Drivers
Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS release has been made available to download. The 3rd point release in the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS series, this update rolls together all of the security patches, bug fixes, and software updates issued to the Jammy Jellyfish since the previous point release, into a shiny new ISO image. I.e. it’s a real time saver for those doing a fresh install. Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS also includes a new hardware enablement stack (HWE) composed of Linux kernel 6.2 and Mesa 23.0.4 (a sizeable update in itself). Package updates include GNOME Shell 42.9, LibreOffice 7.5.5 (an uplift over the the 7.3.x series), :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Users Can Now Upgrade to Linux Kernel 6.2
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS users can now upgrade to Linux kernel 6.2 using the Software Updater tool. Ahead of the formal Ubuntu 22.04.3 point release due next week (August 10) Canonical has issued an updated kernel to existing LTS existing users to install. It back-ports the Linux 6.2 kernel used in Ubuntu 23.04 “Lunar Lobster”. Typically, HWE updates roll out once the formal point release itself is made. This time the update has arrived earlier – which is great news for those already on the LTS as it means they can benefit from all the new features in Linux 6.2 without :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.04 Fixes Window Snapping Memory Bug
Users of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS who make use of window snapping to enhance their productivity will be interested in a bug fixes coming down the update pipes shortly. The Mutter 42.9 update currently in Jammy’s proposed repo contains a fix for high memory and lagginess when resizing side-by-side tiled windows. Given that Ubuntu 22.04 only supports vertical side-by-side window tiling — the upcoming Ubuntu 23.10 supports quarter tiling out-of-the-box — this is likely to be a bug that has affected many users. I was interested to see if this bug was reproducible on any of my 22.04 installs. I fired :sys_more_orange:

Show Remaining Disk Space in Nautilus on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
Here’s a quick tip for those of you looking for an easy way to see see remaining disk space in the file manager of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Once upon a time — like, really far back — the Nautilus file manager had a static status bar. This gave you an easy, at-a-glance way to see the amount of remaining disk space in whatever drive or folder you were viewing, at all times. Alas, this feature was lost to the sands of time (well, development priorities). Nautilus still comes with a status of sorts but it’s now a floating overlay that :sys_more_orange:

Canonical Bringing Livepatch Support to HWE Kernels
Ubuntu Pro subscribers will be able to apply reboot-free updates to more Linux kernels from July. As spotted by our friends at Neowin, Canonical announced Livepatch support for Hardware Enablement (HWE) kernels starting this summer. The first HWE kernel being covered as part of this support extension is Linux 6.2, which will be backported from the Ubuntu 23.04 release and pushed out to users of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Livepatch is a feature only available on long-term support (LTS) versions of Ubuntu for users with an active Ubuntu Pro subscription. When enabled, Livepatch allows users to install kernel updates (on eligible :sys_more_orange:

Breath Lets You Run Regular Ubuntu on Modern Intel Chromebooks
This post is not a tutorial or a walkthrough or comprehensive introduction or anything else that would probably be beneficial or helpful to those you reading it. Instead, it’s a bit of a waffle. I’ve just spent a few hours playing with something very cool on my over-powered and under-used Acer Chromebook Spin 13. I’ve scratched an itch I’ve had for the longest time and it’s so satisfying. So, a bit like when I resurrected an ancient Chromebook, I want to tell someone about it — but this time without any weird spooky gifs 😅. Run Linux on Modern Intel :sys_more_orange:

A Memory Quirk in Ubuntu 22.04 is Killing Apps too Frequently
If you’ve found memory management in Ubuntu a little too aggressive since upgrading to 22.04 LTS know this: you are not alone. A new discussion on the Ubuntu mailing list highlights issues scores of users are experiencing on the system. It all links back to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS’s introduction of systemd-oomd, a user-space out of memory killer that’s designed to “take corrective action before an OOM occurs in the kernel space’. When it detects that memory pressure is getting a bit too stressed, it intervenes to ensure the system copes, and (most) things stay running. Problem is, some folks are :sys_more_orange:

Regolith Desktop 2.0 is Out with Various Changes
A brand new version of the Regolith desktop is now available. Regolith desktop 2.0 aims to meet the needs of those who seek a fast and efficient desktop Linux experience controlled (primarily) from the keyboard. Regolith pairs the i3 tiling window manager with GNOME Flashback, and adds in an assortment of other open-source components to deliver a curated, keyboard-driven UX. And are some big changes since the Regolith 1.6 release from last summer. For one, devs have replaced the rofi “launcher” with a new “desktop executor designed specifically for Regolith” called ilia. How to Disable UI Animations in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
For a quick and effective way to make Ubuntu feel instantly faster you can disable UI animations. In fact, turning animations off in Ubuntu is a guaranteed way to get the best performance from the system on older and lower spec’d computers. Many desktop effects, while pretty, require beefier system resources to run. Desktop animations in Ubuntu —heck, any major end-user OS serve a purpose. They can often be over the top but they’re not entirely pointless. They help make the desktop feel more fluid and graceful in use. But this can come at a cost: speed — though more :sys_more_orange:
