Death is Coming for Ubuntu 22.10 – Upgrade Soon!

A quick heads-up to anyone still using Ubuntu 22.10 — support for it ends on July 20, 2023. That’s less than a month way away at the time of writing. The good news is that you’re not out of options. You can upgrade to Ubuntu 23.04 in-place, without needing to reinstall. You may need to manually re-enable any PPAs or 3rd-party repositories you’re making use of, though. However, this will only be a short-term solution as support for Ubuntu 23.04 ends early next year. Hate the hassle of upgrading regularly? Interim Ubuntu releases expire every 9 months so, to avoid :sys_more_orange:

How to Upgrade to KDE Plasma 5.27 on Kubuntu 22.10

Kubuntu 22.10 users can now upgrade to the latest KDE Plasma 5.27 release thanks to the ever-dependable Kubuntu backports PPA. As expected, Kubuntu developers put in the effort necessary to package the latest Plasma release for use atop Kubuntu 22.10. As the backports PPA is entirely opt-in (i.e. it’s not enabled by default) users must go out of their way to add it in order to receive the update. KDE Plasma 5.27 features a variety of cool things, the most notable being a(n incredibly cool) new window tiling experience, and major improvements to multi-monitor handling. There are also Flatpak setting :sys_more_orange:

‘Folder Color’ Tool Add Support for Ubuntu 22.10

You’re probably already familiar with Folder Color, a terrifically nifty tool that makes it easy to change the colour of folder icons in Nautilus. Well, I’ve some good news: it recently added support for Ubuntu 22.10 and GNOME 43. This means you can continue to change the colour of any folder in Nautilus, as well as badge folders with a selection of emblems. If you’ve used the tool in earlier versions of Ubuntu and Nautilus nothing has changed: right-click on any folder in the file manager and page into the ‘folder color’ menu, and pick a hue from the list :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.10 comes with a number of improvements to the user experience, a new sound server, new text editor app, and Linux kernel 5.19. It also boasts better-than-ever support for the Raspberry Pi single board computer. As a short-term support release this version of Ubuntu comes with 9 months of app updates and support. It’s not long, but it take us well past the release of its successor, Ubuntu 23.04 which is due in April of next year. If you stay on top of your Ubuntu news you should :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.10: What’s New? [Video]

Ubuntu 22.10 is primed, ready to release on October 20 and to help ratchet up the excitement I’ve put together a short video to showcase the release’s most exciting new features. Not that any of them will be a surprise if you read this blog often enough! All told, Ubuntu 22.10 is a fairly modest update to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. While the inclusion GNOME 43 and the switch to PipeWire as its underlying audio stack are very positive changes, they’re not enough luscious enough to lure long-term support fans away from the bosom of stability. There’s still plenty to enjoy, :sys_more_orange:

Eager to Try Pop!_OS 22.10? Well, You Can’t…

Don’t hate me but I’ve some bad (if not entirely unsurprising) news for the Pop!_OS fans who plan to pounce on the presumed-to-be upcoming 22.10 release: you can’t. Before anyone groan: no, I’m not about to deliver a trite “…cOz vAnILLa ‘bUnTu is beTtEr” punchline. Sadly, Pop!_OS 22.10 is not going to be released this autumn — heck, it’s not even in development. System76’s software engineers want to take the time and effort prepping the next release would take and instead plough it in constructing their home-grown, Rust-based COSMIC desktop environment. System76’s Micheal Murphy confirmed the news in a Reddit :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.10’s New Wallpaper is an Absolute Knock-Out

Ubuntu 22.10’s default wallpaper has been revealed. The new background image will grace the desktop of users who install or upgrade to Ubuntu 22.10 in October. Per tradition, all new versions of Ubuntu come with a custom-designed background image that carries a carefully-rendered character based on the codename mascot, which in this case is an African kudu. But in a break with the past, the mascot depicted in this drape has not been drawn using rigid geometry or bisecting circles, as previous ones have (to get effect, I should add). Instead, the leaping Kudu in the new wallpaper is a :sys_more_orange:

Why Ubuntu 22.10 May Disable GNOME’s New ‘Device Security’ Panel By Default

Among the many GNOME 43 features is a new device security panel that informs users about the security status of their device. But users of Ubuntu 22.10 may be unable able to see it. A bug report filed by Ubuntu developers this weekend describes the new device security feature as “confusing and unhelpful” in its current incarnation. “A default Ubuntu install only gets us “Security Level 1”. The highest level is “Security Level 3”. There isn’t anything an Ubuntu user can do to get to a higher security level from the Device Security screen,” the bug report reads. “If a :sys_more_orange:
