Ubuntu 23.04 Flavors: What’s New?

Arriving alongside the Ubuntu 23.04 release are new versions of official community flavours. This time around there’s a newbie in the pack: Ubuntu Cinnamon, welcomed into the Ubuntu flavour family back in March after several years as an unofficial Ubuntu remix. In this post I share a concise overview of what new features and changes are present in the most popular Ubuntu flavours, along with downloads links so you can download them to test out yourself. Unless otherwise noted, all flavours inherit Ubuntu’s foundational packages, so you get the same Linux 6.2 kernel, updated graphics drivers, app updates, refreshed tooling, :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu MATE 22.04 Will Include Flatpak by Default

Flatpak support will be included in Ubuntu MATE 22.04 out of the box — making it the first official Ubuntu flavour to offer it. All Ubuntu flavours ship with Snap support preinstalled as well the ability to use regular apt repos. Flatpak, however, is something users have to go out of their way to install at a later date. But Ubuntu MATE fans running the next LTS will find they don’t need to as Flatpak is already present. Better yet, all the required desktop integrations with portals are present and working by default. A tiny but telling step; further proof :sys_more_orange:

How to Upgrade to MATE Desktop 1.26 on Ubuntu

Users of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and 21.04 can now upgrade to the recent MATE desktop 1.26 release through a dedicated PPA. The ‘Fresh MATE PPA’ is maintained by Ubuntu MATE developers, and is aimed at existing users of Ubuntu MATE who want to install MATE desktop 1.26 on their systems. However, the PPA (and the packages within) are compatible with all Ubuntu flavours, meaning you can add this PPA to install the MATE desktop experience alongside whichever DEs you use at present (just, be careful). The PPA provides updated MATE desktop components (including new versions of core apps like Pluma :sys_more_orange:
