A lot of high value hands today—the gods were favoring us!

My nadir was when I bid 20-100, and would have made it too, but crossed my own wires and put my 20 in the talon. I (slightly) made up for it by finishing the hour with a successful 40-100 Ulti—though I can’t say it took much skill to bring it home.

We had six, with a nice range of total newcomers to folks who had played with me several times already. We started at the very beginning of the curriculum; by the end of the evening we were playing with Betli and Durchmars.

The last hand of the evening was the most exciting: K— and I got into a bidding war, negative against positive, until he bowed out at my Redurchmars. I managed to make the contract for the biggest score of the night.

Previously, I’ve written [curricula](https://blog.zdsmith.com/posts/a-curriculum-of-vira.html) for complex rules systems, because it’s a common property that certain rules in these systems feel arbitrary—you can learn them, but they function they perform in the system is not obvious. This makes them harder to remember and the system feel lower-quality.

#Ulti doesn’t seem to suffer that problem. As a #game it’s complex. But with a single exception every rule feels “natural”—its function is immediately obvious.
