I run nearly everything off a single 10th gen Celeron with #unraid. I've probably got about 10 docker containers running constantly plus MariaDB and a bunch that I use periodically (like Handbrake, MKVtoolnix, etc). It will run a single VM alright for playing around, though that maxes out my ram and trying to run SQL Server on a Windows Server VM was just too much.

My real concern is power draw, and all told, my system idles around 18w and maxes out around 45w when encoding/transcoding

Started putting this baby together last week, still waiting on a part that’s due to be delivered just as my summer holidays begin 😅

@knipster I have heard of #unraid but never used it.. Is #unraid vs TrueNas a thing?

I’ll will check out #unraid as replacement for my #TrueNAS server soon. There is just no way for me to professionally plan and implement a storage setup, like what TrueNAS would require. I just don’t have the time anymore to research over several days just to find the perfect #ZFS #RAID layout and then invest a ton in new drives. For my hobby server the mix-and-match paradigm and the ability to add disks of any kind at any time is way more suitable.

New territory here: building a #homelab on #unraid and want to see if there's any _legitimate_ way for a consumer to license virtual desktops tied to one user account. Something like VDI, but for the hobbyist.

Built a pretty awesome #unraid server a year or two ago that runs my #Plex installation and associated media services. I hadn't used unraid before that, and its been a great experience.

After the initial move and waiting to see where I would feel at home #hachyderm is where I have landed!

@Lrrr I tried SBCs for my NAS...they work, but I/O is really slow. Ended up buying a recycled HP Z820 workstation. 2x Xeon s (20 threads each), six SAS/SATA ports, and 64gb ram. All for less than the cost of the Threadripper CPU I wanted. And I run #unraid ...its awesome.

So I built an #unRAID machine from a literal box of scraps (drives from my college file server, motherboard from an old gaming PC, power supply from a defunct htpc, etc) and... now I mostly have no clue what to do with it!

What fun things are you running on yours?

Anyone got opinions on #TrueNas vs #UnRaid?

Thinking of switching to unraid for the flexible expandable disk pools.
