It's an interesting idea. You could cobble together a suite of tools to do stuff like steganography, converting arbitrary data to various encoding formats, et cetera.

The problem is a lot of the draw of a good #ARG or #Unfiction is novelty, so I would argue that you should do your best not to rely on old tricks. Having said that, even very successful ARGs still make use of the old cliches, so I guess it can still work.
