It never hurts to read up about #Unicode and text encoding:

Tom Scott also did a good job explaining UTF-8:

What was the symbol used for ‘one thousand’ in Ancient Rome?
https://latin.stackexchange.com/a/21170
Instinctively one would immediately answer “M”, but the history is a bit more complex than this. With a quick excerpt, where ∞ might come from.

Good luck, #Unicode, encoding these ones! 😉

Check out these 8 fine Unicode characters: `▔🭶🭷🭸🭹🭺🭻▁`.
Conveniently (not conveniently) they are coded as U+2594, U+1FB76 through U+1FB7B, and finally U+2581.
(ha! I can't see the middle six in my composing widget on the web, but my experience is that usually they show up okay [later: oh no i can't see the Astral Plane unicodes; how come they are fine in my Terminal, but don't show up on web?])
#Apple made updates available for mobile devices at the beginning of the week, including support for the #moose #emoticon. Just found out: The moose icon has the most beautiful #hexadecimal value in Unicode: U+1FACE 🫎

One week ago, I gave my talk about #DigitalTypesetting. Main points were:
(1) Digital typesetting is difficult; has many requirements; some originate from manual typesetting
(2) There are plenty of standards to follow. #Unicode is [for me personally the most important] one.
(3) #HarfBuzz is an important component. I presented the #hyphenation algorithm with slides by @frischefarbe

#Unicode v15.1 alpha is available for testing: https://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode15.1.0/
There are five new characters proposed: https://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/Unicode-15.1/
UTF-16 really did a number on Unicode. We used to have 32-bits of encoding space, but UTF-16 forced us down to 21-bit. And even then, we only go up to 0x10ffff not 0x1fffff, so we're 15 planes short of a full 21 bits. _and then_, even more weirdly, the last plane (> 0x100000) is all Private Use Area. We could've just stopped at 0xfffff (20 bits exactly) for neatness.
Converting the all-UPPERCASE #Unicode codepoint names into something more readable is surprisingly difficult. Here is my implementation:
If you have any suggestions or find something handled subpar, please drop me a line!
Most lines in that function deal with special cases like “DVD“ , “NKo”, or “or”.
Wer etwas Französich kann, soll sich gleich alle Ausgaben von @MoritzBrouhaha #Unicode-Fanzine schnappen. Sehr liebevoll, lehrreich und witzig.
I'm wondering if there is some resource out there that lists #Unicode "homoglyphs"? i.e. glyphs that are/"should be" graphically identical (Latin U+0041 "A", Greek U+0391 "Α", and Cyrillic U+0410 "А", for example)
I have found Unicode Confusables (http://www.unicode.org/Public/security/8.0.0/confusables.txt) which is great, but includes a ton of glyphs that are close but not exact (the goal of the document is to be as broad as possible for security's sake).
Is there some resource out there that lists only *exact* duplicates?
