Could trees make Wales' urban areas not just liveable, but glorious, by 2050? I think so

We should redesign the sidewalks in #Lethbridge, #Alberta. 🚶🏻♂️ That is, a much larger area of the sidewalk around our #urbantrees could slope slightly toward their trunks, 🌳 to deliver more #rainwater as surface runoff to the bases of the trees, & their roots. 💧 A lot of our urban landscape was destroyed by pavement that is vacant & unused, & it could be dug up & restored & planted with boulevards of deep-rooted carbon-fixing indigenous prairie grasses. 🌾🦋

" ... 6700 #deaths could be attributed to the #urban heat island effect in 2015, and 2644 (40%) of these deaths could have been avoided if there was 30% #tree coverage at a grid-cell level."

NZers make a big deal about mammalian predators—they're a big threat to native birds—but that deflects from the main reason why a lot of us don't have predator-savy NZ birds living in our gardens, like piwakawaka-fantails and riroriro-grey warblers. Most of the British settlers that designed our cities did not like native bush, and designed suburbs and parks with open lawns and solitary standing trees. That's now our "normal", but keeping it that way is a choice.

It's not like the city planners chose to have forest in the Cashmere hills and not in Hoon Hay. If the Cashmere hills were flat, they would have open English-style parks just like Hoon Hay. Gardens in the Cashmere hills are filled with forest birds, and Hoon Hay gardens are not, because a lot of the Cashmere hills is too steep to keep as open lawned parks. Most parks of Ōtautahi-Christchurch don't need to remain open and English and exotic.

Here's a reminder of how important city trees, in dense patches, are for birds. It's maps of the neighbourhood we used to live in, where we live now, and why we moved. These are two parts of my standard run routes through Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ, both at the same scale. Each fortnight I run through one or the other map, where I count and map every bird I see and hear. Here are just the forest-loving birds in 2022, and look at the stark difference!

Goodbye, tree. 😢 According to the trunk diameter on the NYC Street Tree Map, the American Elm was 38 years old. #NYC #NYCStreetTrees #NYCTrees #AmericanElm #urbanTrees
