@KiffinEileen An effective way to keep low taxes without harming services is to increase density.

One cannot reasonably have low density and low taxes while expecting any services to remain.

Humans also introduce fungus into the bats' habitats. This article focuses on what diseases humans might get, but also highlights how humans are destroying the natural environment and making incursions into the bats' home ground.

The world's bat lands are under attack, seeding risk of a new pandemic. Here's where.

February 2023

Our hunger for resources is driving worldwide destruction of areas rich with bats, carriers of tens of thousands of viruses. A Reuters data analysis pinpoints areas where conditions are ripe for a bat-borne disease to spill over to humanity. We’ve dubbed these areas “jump zones.”

"Reuters reporters spoke to dozens of scientists, read extensive academic research and traveled to bat-rich countries across the globe to learn how human destruction of wild areas is amplifying pandemic risk. This five-part series visits some places where the risk is most acute and tells the stories of victims and their families. It begins with the death of one farmer in West Africa."

A recent study of trends in 331 European cities found that there was a big shift (about 1/3 of cities studied) from net sprawl to net urban from the 2000s to the 2010s. European policies to encourage growing up rather than out are working-- and they could work in the US too!

African Women: Their Struggle for Economic Independence by Christine Obbo

Topics

"African Women is a study of the everyday struggles of women in East Africa to support themselves economically. The aim of these women is clear – to be more independent of men. One consequence of this has been their migration from traditional village society to the apparently less restrictive life of the city. Chistine Obbo’s book grew out of her research in Uganda and Kenya during the 1970’s. It portrays the attitudes of ordinary women – both villagers and those living in the cities – to their relationships with men. It presents a detailed picture of the multitude of ways in which these women earn their own living. And it shows the new more independent forms of relationships with men – as well as solidarity with other women – that they have built up."
