Indeed, their track record thus far certainly suggests not. There is a reason we call them #uselessASEAN 😉
I feel this map explains why #ASEAN have been so useless in dealing with the situation in Myanmar. Too many members (all more or less) of the Bloc are repressive & they don't want to see a successful uprising by the people.
and given this information yes it is absolutely needed for more pressure to be applied on Indonesia as ASEAN chair to try make the bloc act effectively for the peoples of Myanmar.
But it is also vital that other actors & blocs don't just blindly leave #uselessASEAN to it, cause there is no proof they will actually take any effective action. There hasn't been any evidence for it in the last almost 2 years.
t's been 708 days since the attempted coup, 1000's have died, 17k arrests, 100ks displaced, towns & villages burned, millions in need of aid...
In that time ASEAN's 5 PC has been as useful as a wet paper bag.
The Peoples of Myanmar need tangible support, not platitudes or performance.
And that there are many other people in the region who need supporting in their struggles to be able to speak out, have a say in how they are governed, be who they are, free from repression by the state they live in.
#asean #UselessASEAN #whatshappeningmyanmar #milkteaalliance
The peoples of Myanmar know that #UselessASEAN 5 point consensus isn't going to help them.
Even the latest stance from ASEAN leaders conference doesn't inspire confidence, it's merely a tiny incremental step forward with no teeth, no real plan how to support the peoples of Myanmar or hold the Junta to account.
The Juntas' sham elections can't be allowed to whitewash their crimes against the peoples of Myanmar
It is up to us to help how we can... Amplify their voices, tell your governments that the 5 PC is shit, donate to the humanities resistance.
Whatever you can do.
