Inspired by uncommnephemera's Twitch stream yesterday and pulled out 3 #VideoTapes from 1989 #fanvids (#StarTrek, #StarWars, Blake's 7) and resumed #digitizing

If you like watching someone do #VCR tape transfers enroute to sharing retro commercials, my friend on YT, Kierstyn, is running a livestream until 1230am ET https://www.youtube.com/live/VlU8s2x2gRE?feature=share

The last generation VHS VCRs are practically little robots. With all their sensors, they can detect the end of the tape and automatically slow down on fast forward or rewind, they detect the state of the tape drive through a rotary encoder and by several systems that can also detect faults and by that protecting the tape inside the VHS.
Here is one of that little robots in action, showing basic VHS functions:

If your VHS recorder is "chewing" tape or ejects the VHS right away and displays "error", then there are two possible causes for this, according to internet sources: Either a loose belt or a greasy rotary encoder.
In my case, it was a greasy rotary encoder. After cleaning it with a leaf of TP, the VHS recorder is working fine again. Make sure to mark the position of the rotary encoder before opnening it, so that you can put it into the same position after cleaning.

A note about the energy consumption of VCRs: They can require up to 20 or 30 Watts of electrical energy, but when measured, the real power consumption is less than that. But in standby mode they can consume up to 5 Watts just for displaying a clock or β--:--β, so you should always switch them off after use.
In conclusion, using Hi-Fi VHS VCRs for reording and listening to music isn't a hobby that requires a lot more energy compared to other analog media.

I wonder if VCR engineers thought about people who just want to record audio onto tape or if it is just a coincidence that VCRs will record audio without video onto a VHS.

What I need to do is to build an adaptor to get the audio from the SCART connector to RCA connectors so that I can use the VCR like all other Hi-Fi components. It is a good thing that the SCART pinout is freely available on Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCART
I have enough recycled SCART and RCA connectors from recycling analog SAT receivers that I can use to build the adaptor.
