Did I hear #SAQ today? Yes.

Did I do it on a large antenna? No, although I did erect a ~11m circumference YouLoop. But there are some issues with it that result in its deafness on #VLF...

So I used my 3-element Quad for #FMDX (pic from May, I improved the build a bit since), and while the signal wasn't too strong, it was still better than last Christmas on a 12x4.5m KAZ! (Though QRM remains same then & now)

SAQ scheduled to air on Alexanderson Day 2023

Sunday July 2 2023, transmissions @ 11:00 & 14:00 CET (0900 & 1200z) on 17.2 kHz CW. Transmitter turn-on procedure would start 30 minutes before each txion.

(I say *would*, as a lot of previous schedules events did not happen... but let's hope everything will be OK this time! 💁🏻‍♂️)

Seemingly worthless fragments of ceramic littering the double ATI house at Marconi's Carnarvon station site are often anything but.

Here's a disc fragment that eluded understanding until yesterday, when I realised it was part of a reel insulator, widely used and seen in operation here, in January 1924, at the straining towers for the elevated counterpoise (mono photos: Bodleian Special Collections, no commercial use!)

The 2023 archaeology season opens, on a very windy but quite warm day at Marconi's Carnarvon station, with some early surface vegetation clearing over a path and drainage channel at the double ATI hut.

This will ultimately restore the original drainage and help protect the concrete remains from freeze-thaw decay. Plenty of ceramic fragments still being found, but nothing very exciting yet.

Just learned about 'Mościcki tubes' in a 1912 Marconi specifications list for the 'Empire Scheme' of VLF stations. Turns out, rather amazingly, that they were a form of condenser invented by Ignacy Mościcki, who was President of Poland when the Nazis invaded in 1939. What a story!

Oh, and somebody has even noted a very weak harmonic on 34.4 kHz on Twente 😂

Remember, that's an alternator, mostly a mechanical thing, so how come could it produce a harmonic?!

.....yeeeeeeeesssss, Swedish Navy station SRC on 40.4 kHz is missing this morning... which is a good sign that #SAQ is about to go on air ❤

But another SRC (?) on 42.5 kHz is ALSO missing 😱 is it from Grimeton/Varberg too?
