The power of multiwavelength astronomy in action: A research group led by Philipp Weber of the Universidad de Santiago de Chile (USACH) and Millennium Nucleus on Young Exoplanets and their Moons (YEMS) used ALMA to check on a young star, V960 Mon. Beyond the dust detectable with SPHERE, ALMA showed spiral arms of gas that are fragmenting, and have masses that can be progenitors of future giant planets.

Nowadays a significant fraction of the observing nights at the #ESO #VLT telescopes (Paranal Observatory, Taltal, Chile) are performed remotely, reducing the number of long distance flights necessary. I would say the tools used to perform and oversee these observations are far from perfect, but are serviceable and getting better.
Tonight I am remotely observing with #ESPRESSO, at the #ESO #VLT telescopes. Tonight we are doing a couple hours of RV measurements before we follow a transit for ~5 hours. I estimate I'll be up until 9-10 in the morning #Astronomy #Astronomerlife

A few #nights ago, #Saturn’s #moon #Titan was encountering a background #star. The alignment was perfect and was observed with the #ESO high-contrast and high-resolution instrument #SPHERE, on the 8.2-m #VLT #telescope.
These raw #images from the telescope shared by Conor Nixon on #Twitter are just amazing.
We can see #Titan as the big and nearby moon with some dark details on its atmosphere moving in front of the apparently smaller #star.

The #photography represents the #galaxy NGC1097.
Mounted on the #VLT (🇨🇱), ERIS is an #infrared instrument which aims at studying with unprecedented details a large diversity of objects, including #SolarSystem objects, #exoplanets and #galaxies.

3️⃣ First of all, why is WASP-39 b so particular to be the target of FIVE #Nature papers ?
Well, this #planet is a transiting hot jupiter, as we know hundreds of them. It's a giant #planet orbiting with an orbital period of 4 days.
Its atmosphere was already well known as observed by the #Hubble #space #telescope (with 2 different instruments), the #Spitzer space telescope, and the 8.2m #ESO #VLT telescope in #Chile.
