It turns out some versions of #vmware #esxi run an #SLP daemon by default. Turn it off if you're not using it, or make sure you firewall udp:427 at the border if you are, to mitigate the reflective amplification attack that's using it #CVE-2023-29552

Following Remiys helpful guide (https://raymii.org/s/blog/OpenVMS_9.2_for_x86_Getting_Started.html) I was able to quickly get a new #openvms x86-64 node up and running over my lunch break, with SSH access.

My first attempts at running it in #Virtualbox (as per the guide) and #VMware Fusion on my Intel #Mac failed, but pushing the VM from Fusion to my #ESXi host was successful

Somewhat unsurprisingly, it's quite a lot faster than my 1993 vintage 25MHz MicroVAX 3100/30 🤣

I've had a kernel module compilation fail for the first time. I've kept putting off upgrading my VMWare Workstation Pro until, obviously, the kernel interface changed. This is one reason I hate to use a product that uses out-of-kernel modules. Shame on you, #VMWare

#vmware store is so much a pain in the arse

Just upgraded to VMware Fusion 13 on my Mac (I use it to run a Windows VM I do my Active Directory management in at work) and it feels a whole lot smoother than running on v12. I don’t know if that’s my imagination or not.
