Recalling another study in 2021 on the #AMOC #decline [2]
"AMOC decline during the last decades" may be "not just a fluctuation related to low-frequency #climate #variability or a linear response to increasing #temperatures.
Rather, the presented findings suggest that this decline may be associated with an almost complete loss of stability of the AMOC over the course of the last #century, and that the AMOC could be close to a #CriticalTransition to its weak circulation mode" [2]

@eyebee yes, the increase in #Variability is definitely a #ClimateDiary theme - see for example this post from @IcooIey a few days ago
🙋♀️ Re-#introduction to everyone new and old on the fediverse: I'm a professor for digital forensic linguistics at Ruhr-Uni Bochum. I work on social media data using corpus and computational methods. 👩💻 Current projects deal with #emojis, #disinformation, linguistic #variability and common ground, and #metaphors.
🐈 I will fav all your cat photos!

So, here is mine:
Hello, fellow #SEResearchers , I am an assistant prof at the Université de Montréal, interested in #MDE #Uncertainty #Variability #SoftwareRationale and #FormalMethods. I have recently become very interested in scientific models, which turns out are big chunks of software.

A re- #introduction in this new instance:
I am an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research of the Université de Montréal https://michalis.famelis.info/
I work to create formal but practical techniques and methods for #softwareEngineering. I specialize on modelling and managing #uncertainty and #variability. I draw from #formalVerification, #MDE, and #empiricalSE.
I recently became very interested in #scientificModels as software artifacts.

It rarely happens I am happy publishing a new blog post, but reading my old ones is really nice. If only because they are on topics I am really interested in 😊, like #variability & #nonlinearity.
This post from 2012 explains why cloud structure is important for radiative transfer (how solar radiation from the sun travels through the atmosphere). It thus describes why radiative transfer is so hard to do in climate & weather models.

A meta-research question. In #meteorology, I often see #Variability as a noun in titles of articles and talks. Engineering, in contrast, rarely uses this word and instead Statistical description or Uncertainty or Dynamics are used instead. Variance and probability density functions may appear in the results and discussion but rarely in the title
Why do you think that is so? Is Variability often a central research question in meteorology that it is emphasized in the title?
