Good spin period measurement of the #Vela #pulsar today in an observation from my backyard #radioastronomy observatory - despite a low S/N.📡

Sometimes I see a significant scatter tail in my Vela pulsar observations. But my system is small and therefore the S/N is low - so it could just be noise/RFI. #radioastronomy #citizenscience #vela #pulsar.

From my backyard #radioastronomy #observatory I have been observing the #Vela #pulsar for more than 5 years with almost 100% daily cadence. The purpose of this is to detect #glitches in Vela's spin down. To date I have detected two glitches in HawkRAO data. I became the first *amateur* radio astronomer to detect a glitch in any pulsar. Even after 5 years there remains the pleasure of seeing the latest Vela signals from 900 light-years away appearing in my data.

For years I have been amazed by the ingenuity of every little detail in #Exped’s tents. Both my #Venus II and the #Vela I (which sheltered me for over 120 nights on my trip to China) have so far not let me down, although I pushed them to limits at -12°C at 4,000m altitude. (4/7)
