Update on the old ventriloquist figure I am restoring. I have a look in mind - a famous old figure whose look changed over the decades. Mine needed better ears. They will be on show, because the hair is short-back-and-sides. Now he won't be able to pretend he hasn't heard me when I speak to him. #Ventriloquist

I've started tidying up the eye cutouts of this old ventriloquist figure. One was damaged. I haven't decided what to do with the upper eyelids. Possibly nothing, shapewise. (Asymmetric eyes are common in old figures, and in people!) Each side took several tiny bits of paper. #Ventriloquist

Found the work-in-progress photo of the hatch on the back of the head of this old ventriloquist figure. You can never have enough clamps - some gentle, some that will not be denied. 😉 #Ventriloquist

Aiming to make the hatch on this old ventriloquist figure's head as neat as possible - something like.. one screw to remove it. The head has been restored a few times before I came along, and the hatch was badly cut and torn in two. He shouldn't have to suffer any more. Getting there. #Ventriloquist

You're too close. 🤨 Move back. Way over there. This is closer scrutiny on the teeth than I feel comfortable with. The teeth of this old ventriloquist figure won't be seen so clearly. You'll only get flashes of the top teeth, and the bottom teeth (not in their correct place here) will mainly just show their top half. Move back about 12 feet and they look great. 😅 #Ventriloquist

The feet of this old papier maché ventriloquist figure were definitely not made for walking - especially with the boot soles as they were, and the feet squashed a bit (side to side). I love the red. I hope I can do it justice. #Ventriloquist

Always good to check the "stuffing" of a ventriloquist figure's limbs, or any place where newsprint is exposed. "Evening World" was published in Bristol UK up to 1962. This little guy I'm working on is 92. 🥸

This is where I'm up to on restoring the ventriloquist figure's body. All previous "restoration" work was falling apart. I've used various sorts of paper, and two glues. Most of it was hide glue (great stuff), but I also used a good wood glue . I incorporated all original material, and create a strong neck hole, recreating the chest and the rear bridge across the back of the shoulders. This figure is a hand shaker, so needs to be strong. #Ventriloquist

Close-up of the eye. Although many papier maché ventrioquist heads look a little crude (and some are), many are also very precise, with 1mm tolerances. Here the papier maché thins right down around the eyes to.. paper thickness. The crumbling gesso has pulled some of the paper away, but this can be restored using part-torn/part-cut thin paper, with gesso built over the top. #ventriloquist
