#VernorVinge (born 2 October 1944) is an American science fiction author and retired professor. He taught mathematics and computer science at San Diego State University. He is the first wide-scale populariser of the technological singularity concept and among the first authors to present a fictional "cyberspace".
Man, #VernorVinge is a lot younger than I thought he was.
Also, #american.
And still alive.
I thought he was like "he would be 106 if he were alive" old.
Nah @joshuaCrewe, Stephenson's "Metaverse" definitely was about full virtual reality. If anything, Musk's notion to plug into the net via direct neural interfaces is part of that too.
I think the current Fediverse is a lot closer to how #VernorVinge described the galaxy-spanning communication networks: text messages passed among federated peer hosts, with automated translation of varying quality.

@joeycastillo @davedarko came to say #VernorVinge is an absolutely awesome author! That series wins extra awesome status.
His ability to create believable cultures, show how they came to be and how they struggle with who they are is unparalleled in my opinion.
And he does it with completely believable aliens as well as human characters.
You get used to 'dropping in' to that culture and find yourself going 'bad, but I can see how it came to be ..'.
