On Memorial Day, we honor and remember veterans and their service. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the observance was originally called Decoration Day three years after the Civil War ended on May 5, 1868. Through an act of Congress, the day officially became a national holiday in 1971.

#Veteransday. My dad, Nick, sailed out of and back to San Francisco and Oakland on countless merchant marine, Navy and hospital ships during WWII. He was on one of the first ships to sail to Pearl Harbor after it was bombed. They sailed through many dangerous areas, delivering supplies. Later witnessed the hydrogen bomb explode on Eniwetok.
