Hello! I’m Sarah Mead Leonard, and I study the art, material culture, and landscapes of Victorian Britain. My dissertation was on William Morris and the Thames. I’m in New Haven, CT, where I have a postdoc at the Yale Center for British Art. My Monday caffeine of choice is usually Irish breakfast tea, but today a visiting scholar gave me some lovely peach green tea from Japan!

Our dear Mr Paton was quite the mover and shaker, getting to meet with the pasha in #Belgrade and being invited to one of the rare social occasions at Knez Aleksandar's court for the leading people of the realm.
Regular followers might even recognise a name or two from a couple of our previous posts about the Načertanije.

I'm at a loss for this juror's surname. I thought maybe "Glad" or some variation, but no luck. When this happens, I often find them in the Electoral Register since jurors were often geographically clumped near one another, but I've found no candidate for this man. #Victodon #VictorianStudies

My #introduction: I am a writer, poet, and scholar whose work focuses on place, #labor, the intersection between prose and poetics, #race, and the nineteenth-century novel. Arthur Machen puts forward that what makes something "fine literature" is a feeling of ecstasy. This is a general term he uses for: rapture, beauty, adoration, wonder, awe, mystery, sense of the unknown, desire for the unknown.
Ecstasy itself comes from feeling outside oneself.
Of course there is a sexual component that is not explicitly in Machen's literary theory but is present in his fiction.
Can ecstasy be divorced from sex? Just feeling pleasure?

Seems like British Lit in the 1890’s was not taken seriously, a phase toward Modernism, then critical attention thought of it as decadent experiments, subversive, playing on Victorian anxieties—but could it be trying to combine traditional epistemology with new understandings?
So much literature from that decade is “fantastic” with the supernatural appearing in the everyday world—it is often traditional or religious epistemologies at odds with the contemporary world.

It's always a real thrill to receive a proper paper copy of something you've published.
There is some deep memory and joy in the haptic that the electronic just doesn't hold.

I have a broad question for anyone who studies literature in the 18th or 19th century of England and 19th century America.
What symbolism, metaphors, and/or values, do you think are contained in portraits?
I'm thinking of them as testaments to power, wealth, greatness---also grasping toward having a legacy. Likewise, they also often represent ancestry and the past.
