OpenShot 3.1 Released with Several Feature Enhancements
A new version of free, open-source video editor OpenShot is available to download. OpenShot 3.1 is primarily a bug-fix update to last year’s OpenShot 3.0 release, which was notable for introducing several major improvements including enhanced real-time video playback, support for multithreaded video codecs, and several significant buffs to the timeline. But there are some notable additions to talk about. Export options are expanded by the addition of more than 400 export profiles. These profiles cover an array of common resolution/frame rates/aspect ratios and the profiles are fully searchable, making it easy to find the one you’re looking for. OpenShot :sys_more_orange:

Pitivi Video Editor Adds Beat Detection, Object Tracking + More
A new development version of Pitivi video editor is out and it boasts some major new features. The GTK-based video editor is currently in the midst of a GTK4 port as part of this year’s Google Summer of Code but, happening alongside that work, is work on adding a slew of other features that would-be content creators will be keen to try. Following OpenShot’s lead, the Pitivi 2022.06 milestone introduces object tracking. I had a bit of a play with this prior to writing this article. To track and object you click “cover object” in the clip options panel then :sys_more_orange:

Open Source Video Editor Kdenlive Gains 10-Bit Color Support
If you’re feeling creative this week be sure to check out the latest release of open source video editor Kdenlive. Kdenlive’s development team has announced the release of Kdenlive 22.04. This is a major update that carries more than 300 commits. While its devs say this release is ‘mostly focused on stability and polishing’ there are a couple of new features you’ll want to know about. The biggest ‘new’ feature in Kdenlive 22.04 is support for full range 10-bit colour. This is a pretty huge advancement that will definitely help the non-linear editor find favour with indie filmmakers. The drawback :sys_more_orange:

Nice, modified mpv-bookmarker script for #mpv to output a #JSON file for each individual #media file, with pairs of bookmarks sharing same name, and then using #jq to output #ffmpeg commands to a batch #shell file I can use to extract clips with each pair of bookmarks acting as start and end times for each clip.
Pretty chuffed.
Who needs #VideoEditors when you can do it all with just mpv, ffmpeg and jq. ;)

Kdenlive Video Editor Gets a Blockbuster Update (Yes, New Pro Features)
Video editing on Linux is in a great place thanks to open source software like Kdenlive. And today it just got even better. Kdenlive is already the go-to video editor for Linux desktops, and today’s monster new release front-loaded with pro features is only going to cement that fact further. The non-linear editor now boasts native multi-cam editing, gains an enhanced noise reduction filter, and intros Slip trimming mode (an editing technique favoured by many professional editors who say it speeds up their workflow). Slip trim is an exciting addition on its own, but it isn’t the only advanced editing :sys_more_orange:

‘Video Trimmer’ GTK App Adds Dark Mode, New Encode Option
Video Trimmer is a GTK app for …You don’t actually need me to explain it, right? 😉 Anyway, it recently got an update with a couple of neat improvements and I thought I’d given them a quick shout out here. Among the changes offered in Video Trimmer 0.7.0 is a new checkbox for “accurate trimming with re-encoding” to the output file selection dialog. Whenever you need a frame-perfect result you may want to make use of this option — though it can sometimes result in lower quality, so YMMV. As well as more accurate trimming, the look of the app :sys_more_orange:

Blender 3.0 is Out, And It’ll Blow Your Socks Off
A new version of the free 3D creation software Blender is out and it looks phenomenal. Blender 3.0 comes with new features and updates like an upgraded ‘Cycles X’ rendering engine, 2-3 times better mesh editing performance, and much faster file loading times thanks, in part, to Zstandard compression. An open-source tentpole, Blender is the go-to 3D creation suite for creatives of all shades (animators, game makers, visual effects wizards) across all operating systems. Blender offers a complete end-to-end 3D pipeline, from modelling, rigging and animation, to compositing, motion tracking and video editing. Am I versed enough in the complexities :sys_more_orange:

OpenShot Video Editor Gets a Big Ol’ Update
A new version of the OpenShot video editor is now available to download — and it’s boasting some colossal sounding improvements. OpenShot 2.6.0 is the first update to this popular open source video editor this year, but it looks to have been well worth the wait. Bundled up inside the latest build are new ‘computer vision and AI’ effects. These include some impressive-sounding motion tracking and object detection capabilities, plus configurable stabilisation effect to (try to) straighten out any shaky footage. However, there are a few caveats to a few of these effects. The ‘object detector’ effect, for instance, doesn’t :sys_more_orange:
