They also say that "[e]xtensive telemetry coverage for the flight allowed for the collection of an enormous quantity of data during the mission" - but why did they then believe they had reached orbit ...?

My analysis of the #VirginOrbit failure. 1st stage went as planned. Second stage climbed to 600,000 ft and 12,000mph. It started losing altitude and the second stage was shutoff early. It fell back to earth, and height readout fell rapidly, ending with 20,000 feet per second (12000 mph) height loss.
