I had this thing happen in #proxmox where my VyOS router would kernel panic at least once a day. I rebooted it and it seemed to work.. Found out it was because i'm using an N6005 processor and #proxmox . Found the thread below that got rid of the issue.. at least so far. Couple of days no panic.

Damn yo when it goes it goes. My whole #network decided to implode. #vyos cpu is pegged at 100 percent and have no idea why. I updated and it just came out of no where. It's still working so I guess thats ok.

My #OVN SDN shit the bed when I rebooted it.. Now it's not coming back :) #networking is horrible

With a little bit of determination I finally got a "KVM" vm to run and was able to install #VyOS on #SmartOS.. and got to see it via VNC.. Who would of thought :) .

Next step make this shit into a Custom Image and then try to run it in Bhyve!

@zrail I really don't have it sorted 😜! I had to abandon opnsense cause it caused some sort of problem no matter where I put it. It worked the best when I put opnsense Infront vyos but had my ISP issue. When I put it behind I had ovn issues. So I'm just rocking #VyOS. I'm not done with it yet. I'm just putting it down for now.

Somethings I learned! You should decouple your firewall and router! You want them to both do what they are good at #VyOS

Virtualizing your firewall and router is dope in flexibility, but you have to keep CPU in mind especially if you are using software for routers/firewalls and are moving packets and the overhead of what hypervisor you are using.

Make sure you have enough ports! Pass through nics is just easier.

I was running #opnsense in front of #VyOS and it was great, but I think because of all the abstractions on the network, my isp wasn't giving me a dhcp address. When I static assign, it worked for a minute then the DHCP lease would run out and I would have an outage. So I removed #opnsense from front and It feels like I'm just going to be using #VyOS for now. Really sort of sad about it. Cause I was just getting good with it.

Still having a good heap of trouble with one of my isps and virtualized #vyos. So I'm going to try to pass through the nics and have the VM handle the vlans in #vyos see if that. helps.

Only problem there is I have #opnsense sitting in front that is in transparent mode.. Which has been pretty good. Don't know how i'm ganna work that out yet.

Following this https://alexandre.deverteuil.net/post/syslog-relay-for-loki/. I was able to set up a central loki/promtail server and start shoving all my #vyos / #opnsense logs in it. Still gotta sit with the logs a bit to understand what it is i'm looking at, but their getting there.

Lost one of my #isps there probably a couple of days ago and didn't notice since we have two.. Well, just any any all the things cause it just keeps breaking shit if you don't! 😎

@psychocycle Yea I'm still looking for a good logging solution that isn't going to be a crazy heavy lift. I think i'm going to be setting up promtail and have that push to loki and then put that up in grafana. If I can get the same out out of #vyos than I can out of opnsense. I'm going strait #vyos. Opnsense isn't the most intuitive to do things and have run into problems that finding solutions have not been the easiest.

First attempt. Getting 740mbs with #proxmox at around 80% cpu and it looked like the CPU's were waiting tons for either to finish doing what it was doing.

Second attempt: Split the cpu's 2 for #vyos, 2 for #opnsense! BOOM back to 1gig! I'm using host CPU as my type. This is where the N6500 cpu struggles, when shit's going!

haha more fun in #homelab saga So I have been noticing #proxmox really working when I have lots of traffic , like a speed test, happening. So I'm thinking cause the H3+ has realtek nics. That it might be an outdated driver. Bahah bricked my shit! Had to rebuild my whole #proxmox node and #VyOS router!

My only saving grace was that I wanted to automate the config of #VyOS with #Ansible so I took note of all of my commands. I had these biatch back rocking in like 10 minutes.

interesting #proxmox is really working ( cpu ) when I do a speed test on my 1 gig cable isp, but #vyos is barley moving the needle it's cpu usage. Is this a configuration thing? Is there a magic bullet to get some network performance on #proxmox

As i'm yapping about this damn #VyOS #homelab #proxmox bullshit i'm putting myself through. I'm starting to see complexity. I got source ip PBR, BGP, SDN! I still want to mess with VRF's to leak BGP routes between them but that doesn't seem to work as I thought on #VyOS.

Looks like I have not had any kernel panics yet with #VyOS on #proxmox. I had to do some funky stuff to get an IP from my cox isp. #VyOS wouldn't pull any dhcp at all. I called #cox support and talking networks with them is like a bad trip on mushrooms.
So I had to connect my laptop and grab all the address info, spoof the laptops mac address, then statically assign me the IP. I know it's ganna cause problems, but fuck it.

@OGSH and just like that with a little bit of luck and messing around I'm back on #vyos on #proxmox with the correct management vlan ip.. The problem! I had a chicken and egg type of problem. I added a gateway to proxmox vlan which didn't' existing until I got #vyos up.

I think i'm back!! We will see for how long :)

I should spent the time automating the router 😅, it's like the 3rd time I'm at it . This should take me forever because I'm learning yet another platform! This is #homelab! Shut up and just do it!!
