— Italian freedom fighter Guglielmo "Willy" Jervis and 4 other partisans were murdered by the Nazis , August 5, 1944, in Villar Pellice.

Their bodies were left hanging from poles and balconies as a warning to the local civilians.

— German freedom fighter Hilde Rake was murdered by the Nazis 80 years ago in Plötzensee.

A member of the Schulze-Boysen/Harnack group with her husband Hans Coppi (executed on 22 December, 1942,) she was captured by the Gestapo & later guillotined.

Small correction: It has been in the late Weimar Republic, when Hitler and his NSDAP scum still competed in elections and German conservatives handed over power because they thought they could control the Nazis.

Almost 80 years after the end of , you can still find empty spots in where buildings were destroyed, but not reconstructed or the property is now used otherwise. Next to this one in is a fire station, so the wall has matching illustration.

— 23-year-old Italian freedom fighter Pierfranco Bonetti was killed in action on the Montenegro/Serbia border in 1944.

A lieutenant in the Italian fascist army, he joined the Yugoslav partisans in Podgorica in September 1943 to fight the Nazis.

— Jewish Polish freedom fighter Ester Wajcblum was murdered by the Nazis in 1945 in Auschwitz.

Captured after the Sonderkommando revolt of October 7, 1944, for which she had smuggled gunpowder out of her workshop, she was hanged with other 3 women.

Though born more than thirty after the end of the Second World War, the global conflagration suffused my childhood. My father served in the War and carried the scars throughout his life. He was one of the lucky ones.

As a consequence, every year I take a moment to remember those who put their lives on the line to secure the freedoms I have enjoyed all my life.
