It wouldn't surprise me if some of these islands were the first in #Europe to disappear because of #SeaLevelRise - the pace of silting in the #WaddenSea will perhaps not be able to keep pace with rising seas within a few decades, at least not in all places.

Individual red knots🐦 have different characters. This seem important for the resilience of the whole group. Selin Ersoy studied for the 1st time that behaviour observed in experimental settings corresponds with actual real-life behavioural strategies in the #WaddenSea.
Fast explorers use more visual foraging and eat soft prey such as worms, while slow explorers use tactile foraging and feed on hard-shelled prey such as cockles.

Researchers from NIOZ, the University of Groningen, and @utrechtuniversity have constructed artificial #reefs made of pear-trees in the subtidal Dutch #WaddenSea in a novel experiment as part of the project Wadden Mosaic. The first surveys now show that the reefs are teeming with life. Seaweeds, barnacles, sea squirts, anemones, and bryozoans cover the tree reefs, while fish are 5x more abundant on the reefs compared to the open sandy seafloor.
