Curious to know if there's research on the effectiveness of "turning vehicles yield to peds" signs like the one deployed here (simple sign on an overhead wire, no other countermeasures). My search is coming up empty.

Some day we will stop pretending we can fix unsafe street design with signs.

Dangerous street & intersection designs can keep people from walking & biking even if they never actually get hit. Like this intersection, near my home, which is designed to place waiting pedestrians directly in the path of on-coming vehicles. It's unnecessarily stressful, and would be considered laughably unacceptable by any contemporary best practice.
Yet we still build stuff like this? Why?

The very beginning of , aka my personal way of coping with the early sense of helplessness, which quickly snowballed into the biggest, hardest, most chaotic, most famous, most impactful, and most exciting project I've ever undertaken.

colleagues: In my ongoing quest to reduce exposure for pedestrians at 2-stage crossings (with a median/pedestrian refuge), I'm in search of examples of 2-stage cossings that either:

* Do not require a second request for a from the (one controls both stages), or

* Immediately trigger a ped phase when a walk signal is triggered from the refuge island.

I used to think of blocked and as death by a thousand paper cuts, but I've realized the more appropriate analogy is Russian Roulette. If you or ride a bike, you never know which time you have to "just go around" is going to be the time that gets you killed.
