Ok I promise this is the last Wānaka Tree picture. This is a ten second exposure at f/135 using a 35mm pinhole camera. The film was Eastman 2254 Color Digital Intermediate Film which I have made monochrome.

The Crown Range Rd links to . The iconic “bra fence” has been a quirky photo op for many years, now focusing attention on breast cancer (📷1). Cardrona Hotel has been a stop on this route for even longer—since 1863 (📷2). Great views up & down the Gibbston Valley/ Kawarau River gorge below (📷3&4), then “The Zig Zag” hairpin sequence drops you onto SH6.

Mt Iron at 545m (240m from ground) in offers views over the Wānaka & Hāwea lakes, Cardrona Valley, upper Clutha basin & mountains within Mt Aspiring National Park. Carved by a glacier, the distinctive “roche moutonnée”/ sheepback shape forms when bedrock is eroded asymmetrically, causing a gentle upglacier slope & a blunter quarry-like face on the downglacier side.

Rippon Winery, . Did you know… White wines ferment from skinless grapes, reds in skins. Supermarket & wine-making grapes very different. In NZ premises selling alcohol must serve at least 3 types of food (hence a free tasting!). Single source of Osteiner grape in NZ (2 others in DE). 60% output is Pinot Noir, cellared in oak to soften tannins. Ruby Island in 📷2&3.

(2/2) Lake at 280m has a depth of 311m (so below sea level) & is filled by rain & snow melt (glaciers drain to the West Coast). Previously grazed (given free-for-all land claims in the absence of Māori) but now a reserve, Mou Waho offers “an island on a lake (Arethusa Pool; 📷1), on an island on a lake (📷2&3), on an island in the sea.” Alive with 🎵bellbirds (📷4).

(1/2) From Lake itself it’s a bit easier to get a handle on the local landmarks: Roys Peak at 1,578m (📷1); Treble Cone, South Island’s largest ski area, is at 2,058m (📷2); & Black Peak rises to 2,289m (📷3). The lake has 4 significant islands, including Ruby Island—a setting for prohibition-era dance parties. Also Mou Tapu—difficult to access, with no tracks (📷4).

Golden hour as we drove out of the Matukituki Valley back to . Glendhu Bay seen from Mount Aspiring Bay was nicely lit (📷1). Seen from Glendhu Bay Track, Mt Aspiring/ Tititea is the right-most of these 3 distant peaks (📷2). Hard shooting into the sun, but think the golden flare & mist makes 📷3 my fav! A telephoto shot of Mt Aspiring (📷4), which peaks at 3,033m.

After Rob Roy & before returning to car park at Raspberry Flat, took in views from the first stretch of the West Matukituki Track (📷1&2). Driving out of the Matukituki Valley (via 9 fords & as many cattle grids) towards , you’ll pass a suspension bridge that is the trailhead for the East Matukituki Track; here are the up & downstream views (📷3&4).

John Creek at Lake Hāwea (📷1&2) would have been a lovely spot to camp but not permitted; shame as would have enjoyed the Gladstone Track cycle trail, 7km between here & the Hāwea Dam. Traffic jam (📷3) & reflected evening light (📷4) along 50km -Mt Aspiring Rd en route to Raspberry Creek Conservation Area, at end of public gravel road in Mount Aspiring National Park.

A return to the Blue Pools in Makarora Valley at northern end of Lake , with two goals. First, to witness the transparent blue-tinged waters (📷1-3) that we missed earlier after heavy rain. Second, to photograph the rare 🐤mohua (bush canary/ Mohoua ochrocephala); 📷4 is sadly the best I could manage with a slow camera. If you managed better, please do share by reply.

Lovely & popular short walk from Outlet Reserve (📷1) at Lake following Outlet Track along Clutha River/ Mata-Au (📷2&3) into Albert Town (📷4); about 4km & forms part of Te Araroa Trail. From its origin the glacier-fed Clutha flows 338km SSE to empty into Pacific near Balclutha, where a 570 m3/s flow rate makes it NZ’s largest; one of world’s swiftest too at 15+km/h.

Homestead Bay (📷1&2) & Glendhu Bay (📷3&4) on the western shores of Lake . The former is the trailhead for the Minaret Burn Track; the steep island seen in 📷2 is Moa Tapu, a 120 hectare pest-free scenic reserve with no tracks. The latter is dominated by a large lakeside motorcamp, providing a base for water sports, hiking, cycling, rock climbing, etc.

Just off -Mt Aspiring Rd, Diamond Lake sits in a glacier-sculpted landscape at the bottom of towering schist cliffs. Oral traditions tell of local Māori inhabitants, but they’d gone when Europeans arrived in 1853 to establish farms. 100 years later there was ice skating here; now too warm. Awesome views from Diamond Lake Lookout (📷1&2) & from the Loop Track (📷3&4).

Lake in is NZ’s 4th largest. Activities include hiking up Roys Peak; at 1578m it dominates the lakefront skyline (📷1). There’s kayaking or SUP hire (📷2) as water-based options. Mt Iron (📷3) is a short walk with a 250m ascent. A lakefront stroll from the town centre leads to , a much-photographed 70+ year-old willow growing in the lake (📷4).
