Today in 1813, the Battle of Stoney Creek occurred. In the battle, 3500 Americans attack 700 British soldiers but the British rout the Americans, winning a decisive victory in a turning point for the war and the American attempts to take the Niagara Peninsula.

Today in 1866, the Battle of Fort Erie was fought between the Canadian militia and the Fenian Brotherhood.
Over 400 Fenians met 79 militia, capturing 54. Soon after 5,000 British & Canadian troops arrived & the Fenians fled.
This was the last battle of the Fenian Raids.

Today in 1939, King George VI dedicates the National War Memorial. Built initially to honour the dead of the First World War, it is rededicated in 1982 to include those who died in the Second World War & Korea. & again in 2014 for Afghanistan & the Boer War dead.

It is fought in Europe, India, at sea and in North America
On Sept. 13, 1759, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham is won by the British.
Four years later, France cedes New France to Britain.

The battle sees 280 Metis meet 900 Canadian militia at a coulee.
Despite being low on ammunition & outnumbered, the Metis, led by Gabriel Dumont, achieve a huge victory & briefly halt General Middleton's advance towards Batoche.

Today in 1910, Paul Triquet is born in Cabano, Quebec.
On Dec. 14, 1943, he led & inspired his small force of men to hold their position against overwhelming odds for an entire day. For his actions, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
He died in 1980.

Today in 1885, 200 Metis & Indigenous warriors commanded by Gabriel Dumont defeated a NWMP force at Duck Lake.
This began the North West Resistance. The federal government sent 3,000-5,500 troops to western Canada in response.
The resistance ends in a Metis defeat on June 3.

Today in 1891, Francis Pegahmagabow was born. A sniper in the First World War, he is credited with killing 378 Germans, while capturing 300 more. During the war, he earned the Military Medal with Two Bars.
After the war, he became an Indigenous activist.

Today in 1838, the Battle of Pelee island took place.
A force of 300 Hunter Lodges & Patriotes, trying to "liberate" Upper Canada, engaged 126 British, Canadian & Indigenous soldiers at Pelee Island.
It was a victory for the Canadians, who repelled the attack.

The hematologist Oswald H. Robertson pioneered the idea of "blood banks" in WWI by packing glass jars of citrated blood from universal donors in an ice-filled chest that he had constructed from ammunition cases. He convinced countless others to donate blood during the war.

Today in 1901, Mona Parsons was born. She moved to the Netherlands in 1937. It was there, during WW2, that she used her house to help downed Allied pilots & the Dutch Resistance.
She was eventually captured & put in a prisoner of war camp by the Nazis.

Today in 1939, 272 men who had fought in the Spanish Civil War, against the wishes of the Canadian government, were greeted by 10,000 cheering people in Toronto as they returned home.
For years, these men would be monitored by the RCMP.

Today in 1918, Lt. Col. John McCrae dies of pneumonia. The author of In Flanders Field, he served during the First World War as a surgeon. He volunteered at the age of 41, serving in several battles including the 2nd Battle of Ypres.

Today in 1868, Alexander Roberts Dunn died. He was the first Canadian to command a British Army regiment and the first Canadian to be awarded the Victoria Cross.
He earned the medal in 1857 for his actions at the Battle of Balaclava in 1854.
