Wow! The Last of Us HBO premiere was terrific! Well paced story and a great cast. I'm very much looking forward to the show. I just wish Warner-Discovery wasn't raising the price of HBO Max while simultaneously pulling a bunch of content.

My big prediction for 2023 in the media biz is that the current general structure of the Hollywood majors will remain intact.

It’s going to be a rough year as it is for them, so I’m guessing while there may be a lot of people moving around, there will be no major m&a, and no major overhauls (eg, launching or shutting down streamers, channels, or boutique labels) beyond what’s already in motion. Lots of tightening up and squeezing out as much lemonade from all the lemons to come. Expect more cancellations, fewer new projects, and a more skeptical development pipeline.

But other than that, the basic industrial structure as it is now should still be pretty much the same in a year.

By the end of 2024, otoh… 😬

Really wary of all this "right-sizing" (don't look at me; that's the euphemism) talk in media firms today. But it's a good indication that we may look back on 2019-22 as the salad days of streaming, because it's looking like we're going to be paying more (or watching more ads) for fewer titles and narrower libraries, and that creators and craftspeople will face fewer opportunities and options as well.
