Yay, just watched "Sony: Camping In Nature" in true 10bit (P010) with Mutter / #gnome and the #GStreamer waylandsink. The direct scanout path works great, but for the composited one I still need to improve the shaders a tiny bit, otherwise screenshots look like this:
GNOME is shaping up really nicely for privacy
• Background App indicator
• App permissions
• Device Security Settings
• Mic / Camera* indicators
• Screen Sharing indicator
• Remote Desktop indicator
• Location indicator
• Incrementally better app sandboxing
• VPN (incl Wireguard) support
• Quick Network Toggles

Just landed a fix for a small issue in the #mpv dmabuf #Wayland backend, where the overlay surface was always present, even when empty (no controls or subtitles).
This prevented direct scanout of the video surface on AFAICS all common compositors (and would have added an extra blending step of the full window size where it did still work).
For #Wayland folks: just found out about https://wayland.app/protocols/ - quite neat!
For those who haven't been following the #wayland story with #budgiedesktop:
- Magpie v0 is a Mutter fork (43 with some backports from 44) with all the Wayland bits stripped out. It's X11-only, and its days are numbered.
- Magpie v1 is in development, and is a from-scratch Wayland compositor based on #wlroots. It was going to be written in C, but we've decided to use C++ instead. Budgie 10 will rebase onto Magpie v1 when the latter is complete.

@kmeisthax I'd also note that it always was a thing - but we're a bit late to the game. To make things work well in desktop environments we first needed atomic KMS and #Wayland. The fact that the transition from #x11 is such a pain really doesn't make things easier.
I do hope, however, that features like this will further convince people to finally leave X11 behind, given that this will be a very practical improvement for users (lots of battery time).
Just watched Sintel in 4K using display hardware YUV->RGB conversion and scaling on #gnome Mutter with #mpv - no 3D GPU usage (no shaders, no compositing) and also very littly CPU usage (video decoding done by VAAPI) and thus very power efficient.
We are finally getting there - unleash the power of #Wayland :P

@minithebunnyboy Enabling hardware acceleration in Settings -> Interface made things a lot less glitchy & smoother on my side. Also, #steam still works a lot better overall on Xorg than #wayland unfortunately.
For the minimalist platforms (container/Flatpak host systems like #MicroOS or Fedora #Silverblue and #sway ) I have decided to write a Bash-only pinentry using rofi (I use the #Wayland version from https://github.com/lbonn/rofi) for the GUI part.
Its very early alpha version (more like a proof of concept) is on https://git.sr.ht/~mcepl/pinentry-rofi and I would be very happy if anybody pointed to me problems they have with it and/or even if they suggested some improvements.

Will #NixOS allow me to keep #Xorg instead of forcing me to adapt #Wayland in the upcoming years?
Any opinions on that?
Background:
I do like x-forwarding within my LAN. I work on business machine, ssh to my personal host and simply start any application which pops up on my local machine. This also worked with sound forwarding.
I never play computer games and so I do think that Wayland doesn't necessarily offer me much advantage over Xorg while I've read that x-forwarding won't be possible.
