According to Pliny the Elder (that 'friend' of Fabulous Folklore), snow that has lain for a while was filled with large, hairy white-reddish grubs that seemed to be asleep.

Red sky in morning, shepherd's warning!
This is an omen that bad weather is on the way - and it's rooted in science.
A red sunrise can suggest there is a lot of water in the atmosphere. So I won't be surprised if it rains later!
