> In CAN, people can no longer get #news from Canadian news sources [...]
This is incorrect. People absolutely can, and do, still get #news from #Canadian sources online. Go to their #websites and check yourself; still there! Fully available.
You won't find #links from Facebook, but that's entirely different. We passed #C18, a "link tax", and they don't get enough #value from linking to be worth paying it.
#Blame #politicians, not the #companies, if you don't like that.

Far too many #websites and #applications are designed and implemented by 20- or 30-somethings with no #vision issues, or any sort of #accessibility issue. Elements you need to click with nearly pixel-precision when you have fine motor control problems or alternative input devices, #dark modes with spider-thin light grey text on a black background, designers picking #fonts that render 3mm high on a screen, on and on.

No one is #forced to use Twitter, or any other #social #media, to get Canadian news.
Canadians can go to the #websites of the National Post, Globe and Mail, CBC, Global TV, CTV, or a bunch of other places for roundups of Canadian news. Edmontonians could easily find out about this from the sites of their local paper or TV stations.
The fact that people find it easier to use American tech companies' sites to find Canadian news is an indictment of our news orgs, not the tech companies.

Techies: So, anyways... what are you going to do now? Your site traffic has #collapsed, Canadian media #websites have essentially fallen off the face of the planet as far as the general public is concerned. Are you going to ask the #government to revoke C-18?
Government: We Shall ...
Techies: SHUT UP!
#Canadian #Legacy #Media: ... uh, we don't know. Is there a way that we get #paid, and we get the #traffic?
Techies: No.
CML: How about if we #whine really #loudly?

Techies: So, #Facebook and #Google were driving #traffic to your #websites by showing #summaries of your #stories, with links back to your sites. Making them #pay to do so made no sense, to them or anyone else, so they stopped linking to your sites.
#Canadian #Legacy #Media: That's bad.
Techies: It's #worse for all the good media. Wait, I meant #modern media. Uh, #grassroots media. Or ... what don't you call yourselves?
CML: #Little media.
Techies: #Figures.

Techies: See, the way it worked was, you #posted #stories on your #websites. The only people who would see your stories were those who typed "wha-wha-wha dot canadianmedia dot com" into their #browsers and came to your websites.
#Canadian #Legacy #Media: Oh, ya, we remember. The #IT #nerds said we weren't getting many visitors or something. We told them to send out more #invitations.
Techies: Were you proud when they told you you were in the tenth #percentile of your class at U?

#Canadian #Legacy #Media: We have websites?
Techies: I need a drink.
#Government: If We Do Not Stand Up to American Big Tech ...
Techies: Don't make me come over there.
#Lawyers: <popcorn>
Techies: Ok. You got the government to pass a #law making #Google and #Facebook #pay to #link to your stories.
CML: Ya!
Techies: Those stories are on your websites.
CML: Oh.

I personally #recommend you *not* eat a shit sandwich, even if it has fantastic mustard and is served with a really amazing pickle.

1/13 So, this week I discovered my first #serious #security #vulnerability in a public system.
In the past I've found #problems in #software, problems with #websites, with bureaucratic processes, some of which were significant, but they all pale in comparison to this one.
It starts with a #chain of #pharmacies.

#Google has a team of secret engineers who are constantly tweaking their algorithm in order to get better #search results. Any changes made to the algorithm are closely guarded secrets, and no one outside of #Google knows exactly how it works.
How do #search engines rank #websites? What are some of the most important #ranking factors?
