in the relatively short amount of time that’s left between now and 2030,” says Bransome.
The three proposed areas — in #EastAntarctic, the #WeddellSea and the #AntarcticPeninsula — would not just help krill but conserve habitat and protect biodiversity for a huge range of the region’s species.
“Adélie and chinstrap #penguins get almost all of their calories from krill,” says Bransome. “Other predators that would benefit include #CrabeaterSeals, #FurSeals, #GentooPenguins, and #whales,

Really interesting and as @TatianaIlyina says, rather worrying paper from my colleagues in @OceanIceEU on the slow down of #Antarctic bottom water in the #WeddellSea
We had a long discussion after yesterday's #DigitalTwinOcean workshop about what we're maybe missing in the deep ocean... https://mas.to/@TatianaIlyina/110532642869083398

RT @CopernicusEU: On 23 January, an iceberg 5 times the size of Malta calved in #Antarctica🇦🇶
#Copernicus #Sentinel1🇪🇺🛰️ captured #A81 on 16 May after it travelled around 400 km across the #WeddellSea
The iceberg is now only 1.3 km away from the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf https://t.co/rBLqlOL9Aq

#PaperOfTheWeek w11 is Moreau et al. (2023), freshly out in #Nature. For-profit bad, but these authors are real nice people.
TL;DR: so, cool!
Opportunistic field observation of a large #phytoplankton bloom in the #WeddellSea. Checked past satellite images: actually happening nearly every other year. Most likely fed by iron from #HydrothermalVents and/or #microbes, transported by #ocean currents. Happy local #FoodChain, and great #CarbonSink

As nations prepare to meet in Uruguay to negotiate a new #GlobalPlasticsTreaty, a new study has revealed the discovery of synthetic plastic fibres in air, seawater, sediment and sea ice sampled in the Antarctic #WeddellSea. The field research was carried out by scientists from the University of Oxford and Nekton (a not-for-profit research institute) during an expedition to discover Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance. The results are published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science. #Plastic #Ocean

World's Largest Iceberg Shown Breaking Away From Antarctic Ice Shelf In Satellite Images
A massive #iceberg of 4,320 square kilometers (1,668 square miles) has sheared off #Antarctica's edge, making it the largest iceberg in the world. The massive chunk of solid ice is now drifting into the #WeddellSea, according to the #EuropeanSpaceAgency, and incredible satellite photos are showing off its sheer size from the moment it broke away.
