Here's a couple of my mixed media digital pieces that I completed this week. They are both prefixed by the series name - 'In Annwn, Everything Is Fine' (yeah, it's a play on the Eraserhead song) - The first piece is called Revival, the second, The Blessing.

Yr Afanc is a gigantic lake monster from Welsh mythology, often likened to the Loch Ness Monster or described as a monstrous demon-platypus/beaver hybrid. Yr Afanc lived in Llyn-yr-Afanc in the River Conwy. When angered he was strong enough to break the banks, causing devastating flooding in the local area. He was eventually enticed to a lake far away, where he could cause no further trouble - Llyn Ffynnon Las, Eryri.

The custom of tŷ unnos (‘house in one night’) was a commonly-held folklore across Wales between the 17th to 19th centuries. It held that if a person could build a house on common land between dusk and dawn, then that person could lay claim to the legal freehold of the property.

“Wassail the trees, that they may bear
Many a plum, and many a pear
For more or less fruits they will bring,
As you do give them wassailing.”

- Robert Herrick

On Dydd Calan (New Year in ) children carried a ‘callenig’ from house to house in their village. Made with a fresh apple/orange, the callenig was skewered with 3 twigs and adorned with cloves, raisins or almonds, and topped with a sprig. Receiving the callenig is said to bring good luck and prosperity for the household, and in return the children would be given sweets or pennies. This tradition still takes place in some parts of Wales today

Was an absolute pleasure joining @IcySedgwick on the to discuss the of and in .

Come for the cyhyraeth and the giant ghost greyhound of Clynnog Fawr, stay for the rant about the mistranslation and overgeneralization of 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Also, Rhosllanerchrugog gets name-dropped *twice*.

When I'm not making old-fashioned art, I sometimes play with the dreaded AI to make pictures. Here's some recent images of an imagined Welsh mining village, and the Mari Lwyd procession throughout the ages, made by AI, finished by me...

Look at this beautiful Ceirw Arian photographed at sunset on the Solstice this year (made by the_bonnie_black_hare on Instagram, via the wonderful wyevalleywitch also on Instagram)!
The Ceirw takes the form of a spectral red deer hind. She is usually dressed in ghostly white, although her appearance may change for Cross Quarter festivals and sacred days

Beautiful artwork by Valériane Leblond (valerianeleblond on Instagram) featuring a quilt-covered Mari Lwyd. The quilt is based on a design by Jen Jones (jen_jones_welsh_quilts on Instagram). Hat tip to @michaelcymro for this one!
