I finally watched 'Asteroid City' (on Peacock). Not gonna lie -- I'm on the fence. I think I get what the movie's all about, yet I don't. It's not as straightforward as Wes Anderson's previous films, and I know it suffers from an unfair comparison to 'The Grand Budapest Hotel', which I consider to be his masterpiece. Well, I tend to compare his post-'Budapest' films to it, anyway, so that's on me.

I'm sure, like his other films, the theme of loneliness underlies the quips and deadpan humor, but things don't completely coalesce into something more meaningful by the end. I didn't care for 'The French Dispatch', but I loved the pathos of the two outsider characters at the end of the film (an immigrant and a gay man).

For 'Asteroid City', it *almost* gets there, but somehow I got the feeling that Anderson put so much effort on visual magic (incredible colors and scenes, btw) that he couldn't quite make the plot work with it. It was a fun watch on the whole, though -- lots of moments when I "ugly laughed" (the musical number about the alien killed me).

And with such a packed cast, it's disappointing to have some of the bigger names get a bare mention (still kinda salty to have so little of Jeff Goldblum). But that's his style, and it's expected. So, yeah -- I'm glad I finally got to see it though it didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped.

@Ductos I'd recommend starting with The Royal Tenenbaums. It's the quintessential #WesAnderson movie.

Le scénario du film n'est pas encore en ligne mais en consultant ceux des précédents je vois que Wes Anderson met lui-même ces parenthèses dans les dialogues.
Ce qui est rare il me semble, comme c'est rare dans la vie de parler comme ça (le côté stylisé de ses films, là encore).

J'ai trouvé amusant que les sous-titres français de #AsteroidCity mettent beaucoup de parenthèses dans les dialogues, ça correspond bien au film je trouve, ce côté enchâssement.

Saw #AsteroidCity last night.

Enjoyed it, but don't ask me to tell you what it is about but it has that #WesAnderson aesthetic, lots of quick one liners packed into it, a wonderful meta TV show about a play within a play framework, and the two most stunningly good looking leads in a movie I've seen in ages.

Jason Schwartzman with a beard is distractingly handsome and Scarlett Johansson seems to be positively glowing now that she isn't stuck in the MCU with her Hollywood starlet character.

I guess I was the only one who wanted to see Asteroid City for a 2:00 showing....which didn't suck at all!
