My understanding of the #Western movie genre was that they existed in their “classic” form from the 1920’s up through the 50’s, with the Sixties being the decade that revisionist & subversive #Westerns started showing up. Especially John Ford/John Wayne pictures, I understood this combo as the ultimate expression of the classic (i.e. historically inaccurate) Western.
Well both John Ford westerns I’ve seen from 50’s are considerably more politically aware than I would have guessed. “The Searchers” posits that racism is inherently violent and corrosive. “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” deals with the slowly encroaching leviathan of “civilization”, which is represented by the arrival of the railroad and the telegraph. It also exposes the ruling classes willingness to engage in political violence while also taking advantage of the liberal democratic system’s tendency toward laissez-faire policy measures.
Certainly much more thoughtful stuff than I anticipated. Of course, stuff like “The Siege at Red River” where the “hero” is attempting to deliver a Gatling gun to the Confederate army and the “villain” takes it and brings it a Native tribe who of course use it to attack a Union fort also exist. If you’re wondering how it ends, Johnny Reb & Billy Yank put aside their differences to fight he REAL fight… upholding white supremacy.

#Streaming #Westerns #1883 https://m.imdb.com/title/tt13991232/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk
