@theconversationau I think they need to check their numbers. What’s the cost of Darwin being unfit for human habitation?

@jakers I know..find it staggering with all the record breaking temperatures in there is almost no mention of and risks of death from the heat. This is happening now.

Really amazed that with all this talk of in there has been almost no mention at all of the . This is the temperature where people become unable to sweat to cool down. It's related to humidity but next few days these will be a real issue particularly in tourist areas of and . The first chapter of gives a graphic description of a event in .. not an easy read but sadly a taste of things to come with . This graph show the risks from temperature and humidity.

I don't think most Americans realize that although the sensibly hottest places (e.g., Arizona) will suffer from their own climate change effects (like water stress), thanks to humidity the more direct and imminent effects of deadly heat are going to be in the southeast, midwest, east coast.

⚠️ Early Warning — Dangerous Wet Bulb Temperatures forecast for parts of Texas on Friday.

Reminder: The actual max wet-bulb temp is lower than 35°C — about 31°C wet-bulb or 87°F at 100% humidity — even for young, healthy individuals. For older populations, who are more vulnerable to heat, it’s likely even lower. (See journals.physiology.org/doi/fu)

@Sustainable2050 Since I’ve read „The Ministry of the Future“ (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mini) I get really nervous when I hear about unusually high temperatures in the tropics.

As we continue to heat:

A recent study reveals lower human survivability threshold for wet bulb temperatures. (See journals.physiology.org/doi/fu)

Data showed that critical temperatures range from 25°C to 28°C in hot-dry environments and from 30°C to 31°C in warm-humid environments, lower than the previously held 35°C theory.

As a result concerns should arise for young, healthy people in humid parts of the world when the wet-bulb temperature is above 31°C.

> Even heat-adapted people cannot carry out normal outdoor activities past a wet-bulb temperature of 32 °C (90 °F), equivalent to a heat index of 55 °C (130 °F). The theoretical limit to human survival for more than a few hours in the shade, even with unlimited water, is a wet-bulb temperature of 35 °C (95 °F) – equivalent to a heat index of 70 °C (160 °F).[3]

> .. as the wet-bulb temperature approaches your core temperature, you lose the ability to cool down. This triggers changes in your body. You dehydrate.. organs become stressed, especially your heart. Blood rushes to your skin.. to release heat, starving your internal organs. The results can be deadly. “Once the exceeds 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit), no amount of sweating or other adaptive behavior is enough to lower your body to a safe operating temperature,”

is the scariest part of you’ve never heard of

The impacts of increased heat have been left out because we assume, incorrectly it turns out, that human beings can adapt to moderate increases in global temperature.
This turns out to be false, particularly in areas prone to hot and weather. It all comes down to one measure: wet bulb...
