Good evening! For today's #WhaleWednesday photo, here's a picture of a mother-calf humpback whale pair, taken in the waters off Cabo Frio, Brazil, in 2018. We attached non-invasive (suction cup-attached) tags to this mother-calf pair shortly after this photo was taken. While both whales were outfitted with these tags (about 4.5 hours), we could observe how closely mother and calf stayed together and estimate how often the calf nursed. Questions? #AMA #whales #MarineMammals #humpback

No other species on earth evokes so much human fascination and empathy as whales and dolphins, which have become tragic symbols of our deteriorating relationship with the ocean. #WetTribe #TidetotheOcean #WhaleWednesday #Cetaceans

Was machen Wale gegen die Kälte?

For today's #WhaleWednesday, I present a gorgeous fin whale off the shore of Provincetown, MA.
Please enjoy this photo, my first #WhaleWednesday picture. I hope to make this a regular thing here!
I took this photo of a killer whale (Orcinus orca) as it swam by our research vessel during a 2019 whale tagging campaign in the Santos Basin, Brazil. Our encounter with this small pod of killer whales was brief, but their behavior that day suggested they were likely mammal-eaters! Questions? #AskMeAnything

The full extent of entanglements is difficult to assess as most are never observed, but research estimates over 300,000 whales & dolphins die annually in fishing gear, with additional numbers also tangled in marine debris. #WetTribe #TidetotheOcean #WhaleWednesday #Entanglement
