Fuelled by parāoa rēwena (Māori bread) obtained in #Whanganui (“bug” from fermented potato water), visited Bason Botanic Gardens (free) on outskirts. OK, but we’d recommend Paloma Gardens 20km away instead ($10pp). Private but open to visits, is landscaped with plants from across globe but specialises in palms, cycads, bamboos, trees, etc. Remarkable!

#Whanganui offered us good views from the top of Durie Hill Memorial Tower (176 steps); artistic skill to admire from viewing gallery at New Zealand Glassworks; shops to browse/ eateries to dine in town centre; & the Durie Hill Elevator to ride (1919, 213m access tunnel then 66m vertical shaft). Also see Waimarie paddle steamer & the regional museum.

@explorergrace Re #Whanganui National Park, river excursions ran yesterday including walk to Bridge to Nowhere on DOC track; DOC liaison with tour operator gave go-ahead if they checked & cleared the track (which they did). Can’t officially walk on from Mangapurua Landing (Te Araroa Trail) though. Whanganui River Road was open yesterday as most debris cleared by locals, as was road from Pipiriki to Raetihi. However, SH4 Raetihi into Whanganui was closed yesterday & GPS indicates still the case.

Views from the #Whanganui River Road, driven north to south post- #cyclone (debris cleared by locals; alternative via SH4 closed due to slips/ trees down). Stopped at St Joseph’s Church & Convent (1892). A 6.3 magnitude (strong) #earthquake centred off #Wellington’s Kapiti Coast rocked the van on pitch in Whanganui city to conclude a day of adventure!
