If relevant, please feel free to share this account of mine with others on other platforms. I have no time, energy or much interest in setting up accounts on other platforms, but I am an academic, so I do miss the affordances of the bird that was - it was v. good to me during my years.

As an , I still look for cognate academic communities, but have few resources to spread myself across platforms.

On the one hand, I'm really trying to be ethical about how, where & what I publish, cf:

apples.journal.fi/article/view

On the other, I'm trying to be ethical about how I advise others on what/where to publish:

sites.psu.edu/publishing/intro

But when a mentee wants to publish in the journals I have issues with, what do I do?!

I'm really happy that a scholar of hip-hop felt they could cite my work to argue their case:

"Despite academic publications asking that we abide by rather narrow means of writing—neat abstracts, cohesive findings, and succinct conclusions, thereby excluding knowledge that may lend itself to alternative forms of representation (Molinari, 2022)—AD Carson recently had great success pushing the boundaries of academic disciplines."

If your motivation to buy from am*zon is that it's cheaper, then think again because it's not (inc. the ethical tradeoffs).

When it comes to books (and many other items), second-hand is best as is the original retailer, eg the publishers.

For example: Am*zon are selling my book at £28.

Bloomsbury are selling it at £26: bloomsbury.com/uk/what-makes-w

It's also so if it's money you need to save, look around and spend what you can where it matters.

@Iris

Hello Iris, have you read the book? What makes you think I have given the answer? Only asking because I think I have given the answer, but I'm not sure how others are reading what I wrote.

My new research is building on to ask (e)

And thank you very much for engaging - I follow you here and on T. because you are part of the voices that need to be heard on AI, as well as all of these:

My book will be available in paperback from September 2023.

It's relevant to academic writers & their teachers because it engages critically with how knowledge is shaped by the forms of writing we choose.

You can pre-order from
bloomsbury.com/uk/what-makes-w as well as from your preferred bookshop.

If you've read it, please let me know what you think of it and how you've used it.

Thnx

Professor Chrissie Boughey's Foreword often gets overlooked because it is listed under 'Front Matter', but I am really grateful to her for the way she frames

43 people are currently signed up to our session and now I'm not sure how to manage such a crowd, given the session is designed to be a 'conversation':

A 'commitment to the truth' is one of the Social Academic Practices (SAPs) I discuss in my book, where I argue that (bloomsbury.com/uk/what-makes-w) are not its performative forms but its epistemic virtues, including 'a commitment to the truth'.

Such a commitment - even if fallacious or mistaken - implies human agency

I may now get my thesis printed, 4 years on.

I literally couldn't afford to print it at the time. Then work, job applications, and suddenly, , just numbed the urgency & symbolism of having actually achieved a , supervised by 2 mentors I so admire.

Now that writing is being re-visited all over again (since Plato's Phaedrus), I need a physical record of the writing & thinking that came from human me.

"while essay-writing systems change and improve over time,Ā so too will our definitions of what constitutes a good and original academic essay [...] we should be regularly reviewing our expectations for academic writing"

ntm for research on :

"the [AI] training process is highly dependent on prior labelling performed by a human operator. This is problematic because it crystallises the operator’s cultural biases (e.g. racism and sexism) as well as her possible mistakes".

What other biases are being built in to for ?

[ntm]

"class structures the social world, including the academy from which many of us write. In other words, it matters that one language of white supremacy is economic".

From an academic writing perspective, there is much to think about here, including the fact that had to re-write his on 'Black Skin, White Masks' (1952) in for it to actually count as 'psycholgy'
