I suggest that what you mention here are not "the problem" but are still just symptoms of the problem of #WhiteSupremacy.

Coming to terms, society-wide, with white supremacy being a bad thing, would diminish the motivation to perpetuate it.

Real example...#ThomasJefferson wrote to #GeorgeWashington that slave ownership returned a solid 4% annually. Washington was so disgusted, he changed his will to #manumit (free) his slaves upon his death.

Obviously, I think dismantling #WhiteSupremacy is a part of that solution.

Individuals having to opt out implies the systems from which one is opting out yet remains; we need to change the systems so that an individual need not opt out.

But, that's not enough, and we know this. Civil War/Reconstruction tried to change systems. Compromise of 1877/Jim Crow clawed back. Lather, rinse, repeat the cycle. MAGA movements keep undoing progress.

1/2 After spending some time talking about the American struggle to come to terms with #WhiteSupremacy both in terms of history and current events, I'd be remiss, as a Canadian, not to explore truth hidden behind our squeaky clean image.

#WhiteSupremacy - and all its intersections - stains our history, taints our modern social landscape, and masquerades in our political discourse.

To say the foundations of our smugness, when tested, will be exposed as shaky is an understatement.

Regardless their circumstances, the average white person, when asked, will seldom ever say they'd trade places with a Black person. Having "become white" offered/offers hard-won value that is even harder to relinquish.

Dismantling systemic #WhiteSupremacy diminishes the advantages to which so many have become accustomed, presumed, entitled.

In THIS respect, clinging to #whiteness does indeed perpetuate white supremacy.

Yes, they did.

African tribes that engaged Europeans in this slave trade are still reckoning with their part in this history.

At any rate, that western slave trade was completely abolished by 1888.

This thread was exploring how #WhiteSupremacy, #JimCrow and #SystemicRacism in America remains to this day, and how it hurt/hurts everyone.

When I put effort into exploring Africa's modern relationship with the west, one of the first areas for me will be the #BerlinConference.

This thread engaged a few sidebar conversations with others of European descent beyond Irish people, because #WhiteSupremacy expanded the absorption of others into whiteness with similar processes.

Some Jewish people shared an exchange that demonstrated how experiences vary.

The biggest takeaway, for me, is that "we" (human beings) TALK together about this stuff!

The ability/willingness to talk about #whiteness (or #WhiteSupremacy or #racism or #discrimination, or...) can be difficult for some white people, because it imposes on them to face that the system provides unfair advantages to them. We call this "#WhiteFragility.

12/15 "You will not replace us!" Who is 'you'? Who is "us"? Two buckets.

In America, it all gets melted down into one of two pots — you're either some kind of white person (and, hell, one as good as the other), or you're...not.

#WhiteSupremacy will use ANYONE - Irish, Indigenous, German, East Asians, South Asian, and, yes, even Black people - to maintain the system that advantages white people and disadvantages others.
