#Wikispecies has 110,000 templates representing citations to individual journal articles. #Wikidata has many items about journal articles.

Yet somehow the templates and the items haven't been linked together, even though tens of thousands of the templates have DOIs on them.

I am currently working on linking them together as a #WikiCite side project.

@Wittylama @phoebeayers There is an entire universe of tools and analytics that could be built with a real citations database for #Wikipedia - It really would be a major evolution of the #Wikimedia movement, giving insights into what is now an opaque pile of unorganized and uncorrelated URLs. #WikiCite #SharedCitations

@thiemo @Pharos If we had a real structured database of all the references/citations in #Wikipedia, it would help tremendously towards this goal of better AI/ML for #Wikipedia article writing. Whether it's called #WikiCite or Shared Citations, we need this yesterday. @oravrattas @watty62 Maybe the rise of #ChatGPT is the wakeup call that is needed for #Wikimedia and @internetarchive to treat structured citations as a priority. Generative AI tools are creating plausible looking and noisy citation data faster than we have a way to distinguish the valid from the fake. #Wikipedia #ChatGPT #WikiCite @apsmith @phoebeayers @dartar @superhamster

@oravrattas @watty62 Scary indeed. This is why a real database of #Wikipedia citations like what #WikiCite wanted to do would be awesome to have. Not only for checking, but to provide structured citations for OpenAI or anyone to improve their models. This is perhaps the biggest gap we have in the #Wikimedia movement - the lack of any modern structuring of our citation data

@generalising The saving grace is that #Wikipedia has never accepted text that just esoterically looks good. On balance, our policies of verifiability, reliable sourcing, and no original research have served us well, and will continue to in a GPT-3 world. What would help a lot is if we had a true database of citations that we could do better analysis with in evaluating the reliability of texts. #WikiCite @phoebeayers @superhamster
